5 Reasons to switch to Modeling Amps - Yes or No?
tsp17 replied to DetroitBlues's topic in Amplification and Effects
Yep- I’ll be 65 this year and have a bad back. Still lugging a tube amp. Really glad I finally found a reasonably ‘light’ one that I like at sub 35lbs. -

5 Reasons to switch to Modeling Amps - Yes or No?

LOL. Gives your tone extra flavor I did have a Line 6 Helix Light that i liked a lot, but not quite enough to keep. i still had to bring a cabinet if there wasnt a PA, and i was in option overload. Found a couple of settings that were very useable. The old Cyber Twin was cool. I havent tried the new Fender modelers, but I bet they are pretty good. Honestly - blindfolded, I might not be able to tell the difference... Still - nothing quite like feeling that fire, that organic ...whatever it is. -

Yep - i dont get the name either except the “Extra Spanky”. It is indeed very spanky, kind of like a deluxe reverb, Speaker - WGS ET-65 12″ Speaker (8 Ohms) I didnt expect to like it, but after some break-in, it is great. plenty clean, not as midrangy as i thought. sweet high end. -
5 Reasons to switch to Modeling Amps - Yes or No?

I’ve tried multiple times and ways to be satisfied with modeling amps. Lots of benefits, and some are VERY good, but …it just doesn’t quite feel the same. I would have no problem using one at a gig if that’s all that was available, and I have done that. Sounded great through the PA. -
Both terrific pieces of equipment. Well done. Enjoy.

Was really trying to sell my Dr. Z EZG-50 (great amp, but not quite right for me) before trying something new, but got an offer I couldn’t I couldn’t refuse on this Extra Spanky. It was very appealing as a Princeton size and less than 35 lbs clean high headroom black panel voiced 6L6 amp so I took the plunge. It has proven to be right on target. It is taking a little dialing in to get my sound, but I’m close now after a few days of playing it for 30 minutes here and there in the evenings. It arrived on Monday. Looking forward to this weekend when I’ve got a little more time. The patented Hybrid Master is a really good feature. Very effective at maintaining so close to the same sound/tone at variable volume. Seems like it will be highly useful for gigging depending on the room, crowd noise, band volume, drummer’s mood, etc. and at home for the sake of family harmony. Another great feature is that i’m not as scared that my back will give out when lifting it into the car. That was my primary motivation in looking for something in a package like the Extra Spanky. It was down to this one or an Allen Accomplice with the bigger transformer and 6L6 tubes. That is also a great amp, but this one is almost 10lbs lighter. I might put a neodynium speaker in it to save another 3-4 lbs. I use Eminence Deltalite 2512 in my other amps. Great speaker for a clean jazz sound.

I have an acoustic image Clarus 2R. Great for reproducing the sound of your guitar. Paired with a Raezers Edge cabinet- there is nothing better for quieter, intimate, or semi acoustic gigs. For anything more energetic with the band - i still love tube tone, especially at volume. Tried some modeling amps, and i was hoping i could get what i wanted out of them….so close. Someday i will relent to the modern era, but for now my old school dna will not let go of that elusive organic tube on fire feel. Even well into my 60s, and so many amps come and gone,… still chasing it.

I did. I like it a lot. But it is 43lbs for just the head. I have a pretty dicey back problem, so that means schlepping a 43 lb head and 30+lb cab. Two risky lifts, while with a 31 lb combo, I’m reducing the lightest and only one lift. That Dr.Z is a GREAT amp. But not exactly the tone for me. I bought it never having played it and it is amazing and i can get it dialed in with a little effort, but it is definitely way more amp than i need and a little aggressive sounding for me and my use. It is for sale and i am motivated, so someone make a decent offer on it. I just put money into it so it is even better than when i bought it.

Thanks all…. Now looking at a 3rd Power Wooly Coats Extra Spanky. 35 watts, 6L6. Only 31 lbs. Anyone tried one? @fxdx99 let me know next time you are in town.
-
Thanks! I’ve thought about those. I’ll check it out. 22 watts is right on the edge of enough headroom. I’m finding that when i need to play louder, 2 6V6s start to break up. So I’ve been looking for a lighter 6L6 package like Allen Accomplice or Victoria Clube Deluxe.
-
Anyone had experience with this one? There is one for sale local with an upgraded transformer and 6L6s. Thanks Still looking for that holy grail of high headroom 1x12 and manageable weight combo.

Nice! Happy holidays to all.

Got it back from my amp guy today. Sounds really good. He replaced the reverb tank with a smaller one and relocated it to avoid the hum/buzz. Runs super quiet and well now. Also had him connect the bias adjustment pot to the back panel so i don't have to pull the chassis when re-biasing.
-
I’ve also replaced the 59s in a lot of guitars, but they sound great in my H575 Custom. I usually end up with Lollar Imperials as the replacement.

Love this. Genius. I went there once. Wish i had thought to have an H with me. Well done!!!

awesome snag.

Yeah- I can’t figure it out. I will give my amp tech jeff Snider (Snider Amps) a shot at it. He often recommends other little tweaks to improve an amp and is very reasonable. Good guy. He modded my old Vintage Sound 20 and it was awesome. I might have him do some version of the Dr. Z mod on this one. Dr. Z recommended sending it to them to do (rightly so) but the shipping cost alone makes it not so feasible. Would almost double the cost of the mod round trip.
-
Ugh! Had it dialed in perfect for a day then i moved the amp to try it with a different cabinet (the one i gig with) and the reverb cut out. Tried changing the reverb tube, no luck. Maybe a loose connection. Into the shop it will go. Bummer.

This amp was good but almost unmanageable on delivery. Sounded really kind of amazing, but noisy and so LOUD. Very Aggressive tone, even with the 'Pre" less than 11:00. Cool, but I need it to be more palatable at small/medium club level. I can hear why Dr. Z advertised it as having the SRV Mocambo sound. Jeez this thing is an animal. Couldn't quite settle it down at manageable volume. It was not original tubes. Loaded with what looked like a combination of JJ power tubes and a mix of JJ, GrooveTube and NOS preamp tubes. did some experimental tube swapping .... Tried TAD 7025 in V1 and V3 in an attempt to quiet the noise and settle things a bit. Nope. Tried Mesa Boogie 6L6GC and rectifier tubes I had hanging around from another amp...Better ... Tung-Sol 12ax7 reissue in V1 and V3- YES!!!!! Much quieter, warmer and just really plain soulful. Classic 6L6 bold and clear, lots of guts even super clean, still reflecting the character of this amp. I like it a lot. I'm going to try some other power tubes, and see where the tone journey takes it.

+1....me too. this simple device really helps. -
thx @Jaguarguy. i think i’ll keep mine as is now too. i talked to Drt. Z and they say that the mod involves installing a choke and some other tweaks to make it more “user friendly”. I did some tube tweaking and I’ve got it sounding REALLY GOOD, so i’ll keep it stock for now. It was on the noisy side with the tubes that came in it, so i tried a few and settled on reissue Tung Sol 12ax7s that really did the trick. Between the cost of the mod and shipping (and hassle factor), maybe later. Next time i take it in to my tech i’ll have him install bias points and adjustment screw on the back panel for easier tube swapping.

I've heard about that. just sent Dr. Z an email to find out more. what does it entail if you know? I'm replacing some tubes today and it is coming into form....new Mesa rectifier tube, New Mesa 6L6 GC (also ordered some of my favorite TAD 6L6 to try). replaced the installed 12ax7s with TAD 7025. waiting on some new 12at7 to be delivered....
