FrankV Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 I'm thinking I'd like to add a delay pedal to achieve a thicker sound, and get a 'slapback' effect like a lot of rockabilly and 50's guys sound like. It's confusing as hell. The Aqua Puss reissue looks interesting, but the Boss pedals will fit with the converter I use, so no battery hassle. Currently I have a Boss RC-2 loop pedal which is cool, a Boss Blues Driver, which I don't use much since I got the 535 and the Peavey Delta Blues 115 amp; between them I get the blues tones I want. I've also got a Boss FZ-5 fuzz pedal, which I hardly use now because I'm not into that sound at this moment. So guys, what do you suggest for a delay effect? And what other pedals or effects do you think should be in the average players arsenal, if any?
slawnugget Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 ive been lurking at old posts since i joined the otherday and was thinkin there should be a newer pedal thread. for delay i use the boss dd-5 i seem to like it more than my dd3s and dd6. for od ive become a believer in the fulldrive, i like it alot.
kbp810 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I've never been one much for pedals other then a BSIAB2 overdrive I keep nearby for the occasional added oomph... though I do dig a little reverb every now and then as well! I think I could really benefit from picking up one of those RC2 Loop pedals to help me work a little more on playing some leads.
slider313 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I'm not one for too many pedals either. I have a small board, powered by a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 , with a Budda Bud-Wah, Korg Pitchblack tuner, a new Chicklet reverb (which just replaced my Boss DD-3 delay) and an Analogman King of Tone IV overdrive. For jams, or when I don't want to bring the board, I use a Fulltone Fulldrive II.
bolero Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I use a fulltone TTE for delay when I can my quick & dirty setup live is a Boss DD-5 pedal, it works great for more accurate/choppy delays ( I was playing bass once on Pink Floyd's "one of these days" using that & it was perfect ) and has the reverse etc effects, it really is a great pedal & can be found used fairly cheap. Boss makes good stuff, it's nearly invincible otherwise I don't use many FX...maybe a fuzz/rangemaster when I can't crank the amp up *edit* oops its a DD-5
slawnugget Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 never seen that chicklet verb pedal before, i like what i saw in the demos, and cant beat the size. ive been using a holiest grail, which is cool for instant shoegaze and when you want more reverb than you need. do you notice any volume drops when you crank it up? that was always my problem with holy grail.
conorb Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I'm trying to get there without any pedals but sometimes I use a Keely Blues Driver. Like Buddy Guy says, it's all in the wrist. conorb
bolero Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 fwiw I A/B'd a chicklet vs a holy grail, the holy grail sounded better but I didn't like the way the initial picked notes lost extreme volume when you turned the verb up past about 3 o'clock ( into "space" territory ) the chicklet didn't even sound like reverb to me: it must be based on a delay circuit, because I could hear the jagged breaks between samples, it wasn't a smooth organic sounding reverb at all. just sounded like short delays repeated. I would give the chicklet a thumbs down unless you're into digital sounding fake reverb. or I guess it would do slapback well.
slawnugget Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 well i guess the holiest grail will have to keep takin up that pedalboard realestate. i did pick up an old 60s mij reverb unit a while back, i guess i should stop bein lazy and try it out.
iim7v7im7 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I have a small pedalboard but many pedals. My current setup is: -> Sonic Research Turbo Tuner ST-200 -> -> Analogman King of Tone Version 4 -> -> Wampler Analog Echo -> -> Lehle Little Lehle Loop Switcher -> This gives me an overdrive, boost overdrive+boost and delay. I use the loop switcher to go back and forth between my BF amp for cleans and my Tweed amp for overdrive. I really like the Wampler delay. Don't be fooled by the name, it is indeed a digital delay. I use it mostly for slap back when playing cleanly. I also own a T-Rex Replica delay. I actually prefer the Wampler (sound, ease of use, size and power requirements). I also have a volume pedal, compressor and chorus that I don't use much these days. :-)
slider313 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I think the Chicklet sounds nice and has "that old spring tank" sound. No volume loss here. I don't use much reverb, just enough to "wet" the signal a bit. FWIW, I'm not hearing any breaks in the sample. It is new to me , so I still have to use it in a band setting to really get a feel for it at actual playing levels. I always place a delay or reverb before any OD type pedal. The OD is always the last in the chain before the amp.
iim7v7im7 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Interesting.... I always place any modulation effect (delay, chorus etc.) at the end of my chain. I never use a delay with my OD pedals on as well. I have only found that I enjoy the delay when I have an amp with an effects loop and can introduce it after the pre-amp. My amps currently have no loop so I only use it when play cleanly. So I put it after the A/B looper on the BF amp and leave it on for a tiny amount of slap back. smurph1 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 i used to use an old TS-9 for overdrive, but since I got the Classic 30, I'm in love with the "real" tube overdrive, but I do use a Dunlop Crybaby to stir it up a bit.. Now I want a Juke coda amp..(check out the thread) it's amazing!!
jazzrat Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde > Ernie Ball Vol pedal > Boss DD-20 Delay > Boss DD-3 Delay > Boss CE-5 Chorus The Vol pedal after the delay lets me play with as much gain as I want but with control of the output. The modulation pedal after the vol pedal allow for more natural delay tails and swells

Let me see...when I use a pedalboard (usually plug my archtops in direct) I'm using: SD pickup booster Dunlop Wah Digitech Jimmy Hendrix Big Muff Pie BK Butler Tube Driver EH Vintage 70's Small Stone Phaser EH Deluxe Electric Mistress Flanger EH Small Clone Chorus EH Stereor Memory Man Delay Dunlop Uni Vibe Boss Noise Suppressor something else but I can't remember offhand... All into a BBE sonic maximizer and out to my Fender Blues Jr.
DC Ron Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 These are the three that I keep on the floor at all times: Boss NS-2 noise suppressor Boss TU-2 chromatic tuner Boss BD-2 blues driver First two are always on, third is there in case I need it, but is usually off. Also have a Holy Grail reverb pedal but prefer a real spring reverb on 1, maybe 2.

This, from a so-so guitar player.
Ben Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Boss TU-2 tuner Fulltone OCD Hughes & Kettner Replex - tube tape echo sim. - killer, just killer. Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere - tube Leslie sim Fulltone Clyde Deluxe wah I power it all with a Voodoo Labs power supply. I like that I can run the OCD at 12V with it. Sounds even better at 18V, but not enough to run a seperate wall wart unless I'm recording. If looking for a very versatile delay that is on the organic side, you should definitely check out the Replex. Tube saturation, a nice reverb (I keep the reverb set really short so I can step on it for a slight tube boost), single and dual head echoes with a Vintage knob that lets me dial in modulation. It's big but I can't see going any other way. The Rotosphere is not usually on the board - the two of them put together are bigger than I usually want to deal with. Drive, delay and wah are usually enough for me.
t0aj15 Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Since I got my Axe-Fx Ultra all of my efx pedals, processors, and amps have been relegated to dust collection duty as well as doorstop duty. The only thing left on the floor is a Ground Control Pro.
111518 Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Ben: I'm also a user and fan of the Tube Replex and Rotosphere. I've been hauling a huge board around for a number of years --basically necessitated by that big footprint of those two devices. I've just about completed a project to rework my board, but I'll wait and post about that when I can post some pics. (we share some tastes in bass gear as well --I have an old sb-12 and a newer B15 reissue, and my main bass rig is built around a demeter preamp.) t0aj15: Hope you had a good birthday yesterday. Kept waiting for someone to start a thread, since I seem to have a knack for posting too early, but then I let it slip. Hope you had a good one.

Thanks, is was a rather quiet birthday (until I turned the music on), no parties-no visits, just me at home playing my 535/Axe-Fx Ultra combination for most of the day. I do appreciate the thought.
FrankV Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 thanks for all the replies, I've got to try out some of the boxes mentioned. A lot of variety, and some stuff I haven't heard of. I guess I was gassin' for a delay pedal, so yesterday I tried two pedals, and settled on the Dunlop M 169 Carbon Copy. It's analog, and has a bypass, two features I like. I tried the Boss DD-7, but holy cow, you have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how to use it, with like 4 knobs, and one of the knobs has a whole bunch of subdivisions. The Carbon Copy has three knobs and a button; I figure I have my hands full playing the guitar! Anyway, it's too soon to tell how much I'm going to like it, but as soon as it was on I started trying to play "Mystery Train" and "Be Bop A Lula", so it's got that sound, among others. As you probably know, when you fiddle with the knobs you can make it freak out with oscillating space noises, which is what my daughter liked best!

I hate turning it off. Ive come to the point where I dont. I have the reverb turned down and just switch between the turned down reverb and delay. I didnt realise how much I liked it until I tried another couple of delays in its place and wondered what was wrong with my sound. Shame it takes up so much room. I can live with that though. Another delay I like is the Visual sound h2o. Its quite warm.
RJLII Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 TC Electronics Polytune, Xotic Scott Henderson RC Booster, Fulltome OCD V4, MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay (in that order). I just picked up the delay and don't have it quite figured out yet. The Booster and the OCD are both fantastic alone and superb when used together. The result emulates a four channel amp: shimmering clean (no pedals), clean with grit (RC Boost), crunch (OCD), Higher gain (RC + OCD).
