Patrick Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Finally installed the Red White and Blues (after checking again for kid installed holes thru them), I like the results. Although they are not "broken in" yet, there is a grittier quality that I like. Also the amp seems to be a little lighter then with the JBLs installed. I still have a little bit of an issue with what I would describe as a buzz or rattle sound on decay when playing a loud bass note (the low A seems to bring it out especially) occurs on both channels. Don't have the time or inclination to rip out the chassis again and go hunting (my workshop is the kitchen table when the wifey and kids are not around, not condusive to leisurly nonrushed troubleshooting). Although any thoughts from our resident gurus would be welcome, I may rip it apart again at a later time. Will do some pre amp tube swapping first. I did a pretty thorough restoration last summer though I did leave all but one of the old blue Mallory caps installed (coupling caps if I remember right). She does sounds sweet at family room levels though. Thanks for everyone's input on the project. Hi Pete: Sounds like you really got your hands wrapped around this Twin pretty good. Just as a suggestion, Andy Fuchs of Fuchs Audio up in Clifton NJ black faced my 1970 Pro Reverb. Sounds amazing!! The guy's the best. I know that in that 1973 Twin you still have the "non-black face" circuitry. (unless you upgraded) He charged me a little over $200, but changed out all my caps and put in a new set of matched power tubes. The amp was virtually untouched for almost 25 years . . . needed an over hall. If you haven't already done a black face upgrade, you may want to research it on line. Just Google Fender black face upgrade . . . you'll get all the info you need. On another note, if you do want something with less power for earlier break up, Buzzy Levine up in Lark Street Music in Teaneck has a black face Fender Deluxe Reverb in pretty good condition. I think it's a 1965. It ain't cheap . . . but it sure is sweet sounding.

Hi Patrick, I blackfaced it myself about a year ago after I did a basic restoration (filter caps etc) it was totally dead before that. If I had it to do again, at that price I may have just had it done although I learned a lot from the project. I may just go that route, I spoke to Fuchs (Andy I think) at the Brookdale Guitar show a few years back but I just had that urge to tinker. I actually had an amp tech take a look at it (the shop on route 9 in freehold..the guy who owned Nothing New Music in Lakehurst also has a used guitar shop there as well as the amp guy) assuming he actually even had it apart said I did everything correct but that he found a bad solder joint or two and $80 bucks later I had it back. I'm not up for any other amps now, also have a modded Blkues Jr that is pretty sweet. I just would like to have an amp I'm not always f'ing with. Actually the more I play around with amps, the more I am in the mood to go totally acoustic.
