Guest mgoetting Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I'd like to put chrome or nickle covers over these pups. Do I need my soldering iron handy for this? These are SDs. I will replace the neck pup ring since it's cracked. I'm wondering how it would look with black rings. Any opinions out there? I weighed this and it's 10.7 lbs. on a medical scale. It feels it too.
FredZepp Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 The black rings would look fine on a guitar that looks that good anyhow.. But you'd probably find that most would desire the vintage correct cream color. Just like an original LP standard. The black tends to remind me of LP Customs, which is not a bad thing... just that usually they have blocks, multibinding. etc. That guitar won't look bad either way... it's sweet anyway that you do it.

Okay, since you insist- black it is. Fortunately it only costs a couple of bucks to play around with the rings.

If you change the pickup rings.. should the toggle switch chip be changed to black , to match them...? Just thinkin'.. ....and black switch tip?
Patrick Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 As I'm sure you know by now, I usually don't care to be as tactful and as diplomatic as . . . let's say . . . Fredzep was in answering your question. Especially when one solicits an opinion from me. That being said, I think it would look like shit with black pup rings. (I can now only hope that there is no one out there reading this with as similar guitar and black pup rings whom I may have offended) I would also immediately put slightly aged nickle covers on the pups . . . . and go with a Tone Pros nickle ABR1 and locking stop TP. That color and that top is beautiful . ... . "got plenty of vibe" Black rings and exposed bobbins just don't work for me. But , then, it's your guitar . . . not mine.
golferwave Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I would solder the covers on unless you plan on taking them back off soon. I'd complete the look with black knbs, switch tip and switch washer. Nice guitar!

It looks better without the washer. I found some pics of similar guitars with black rings. Not too shitty. Cream probably is better though. untitled.bmp
Kuz Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I am with Patrick on this one, No Black....... but hey you asked for our opinion !!!!
pushover Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I kinda feel like you're asking whether we like blonds or brunets? Each is a fine choice, and each of us will have their own preference which will have zero influence on anyone else's choice. As someone else around here says: "just play the durn thing". Really, whatever YOU choose, it's gonna look sweet
Guest mgoetting Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I kinda feel like you're asking whether we like blonds or brunets? Each is a fine choice I agree. Just no gingers!
yoslate Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Patrick, would you man up and express an opinion, for a change. What are you...like...a Libra or something? You do more waffles than IHOP!!! And "durn thing" is only an approximate paraphrase.... And oh, yeah...creme. That's a given.
yoslate Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I agree. Just no gingers! Jeeze.... Are we revisiting the Ginger/MaryAnn dialectic...again?
pushover Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I agree. Just no gingers! The anti-wife (the ex) was one of them.. and that's kinda put me off 'em... for like.... the rest of my life...

My inability to express myself with any degree of certainty has dogged me all of my life
Guest mgoetting Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Jeeze.... Are we revisiting the Ginger/MaryAnn dialectic...again? Hey, I'm always open to a discussion on them. But no, I was referring to redheads (gingers). One of my sons-in-law is British. I guess the term ginger is not widely appreciated in America but is common in the UK. Apparently there is some prejudice against redheads there. Being part Irish, English, Scottish, German and whatever the hell else snuck in my blood line, some of my kids have a red tint in their hair, and definitely not from their mother. So three of them are gingerish. We try to keep them away from the rest of us and just bring them out of the closet as little as possible.

I concur fully with Patrick on this one, especially on the aged nickel covers; I think they look great on a LP type or 335 type (sorry, 150 or 535 type!!). I've got a Gibson Les Paul Classic, beautiful wood, but uncovered humbuckers. It's the only thing I don't like about that guitar, but I won't change it, as I'm not sure it's sticking around forever. (It HAS been 4 years, but that ain't forever!) Like you said, Mark, it's pretty cheap to try out the pickup ring idea. BTW, I do prefer to have the washer on over the pickup selector, but it's ALL just personal preference. That's why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors, right?!

FredZepp Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I can go either way on the washer. Nice Pic... I hope that it is in our gallery.... Killer Trans Black 1st edition 140CM
Guest mgoetting Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Nice Pic... I hope that it is in our gallery.... Killer Trans Black 1st edition 140CM One of these days I'll read the instructions on uploading into a gallery. I started it a couple of times but never finished.
GuitArtMan Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 shouldn't need a soldering iron..the covers should just screw on there..nice axe by the way.. Original covers are soldered in place.
Millennium Maestro Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I have never seen an unsoldered cover, there are definite tricks to know!! If the pickup is potted you also need to wax the covers as a prep. The downside of not waxing can be a honkey sound and/or microphonic squelch... Sounds fun huh Great video! http://www.mojotone.com/iMojo-Videos/Humbucker-Cover-Video Enjoy Mark

Hfan Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I'd stick with the cream color. Do standard Les Paul rings fit the contour of the 150/157's? I've got one I need to replace. Good luck with the project.
brentrocks Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 soldering and unsoldering pup covers is not as easy as it looks...when i put that aged cover on the HRW of my 59 burst replica...i had a hell of a time!!!!
