yoslate Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Hey, I'm always open to a discussion on them. But no, I was referring to redheads (gingers). One of my sons-in-law is British. I guess the term ginger is not widely appreciated in America but is common in the UK. Knew that "mg." My best friend is Scots. That Ginger/Maryann thread was kind of a running joke, for a while....
Hfan Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 soldering and unsoldering pup covers is not as easy as it looks...when i put that aged cover on the HRW of my 59 burst replica...i had a hell of a time!!!! Did you have to use something more powerful then a standard 25W iron?
Guest mgoetting Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I'd stick with the cream color. Do standard Les Paul rings fit the contour of the 150/157's? I've got one I need to replace. Good luck with the project. They fit. The standard rings come flat or arched. You want the latter. They'll work. I got one from Heritage. It is identical to a set I got from Ebay. Allparts is good as well.

I have a 50 watt iron. What part was difficult? I figure if the covers don't slide on easily, I won't do the job.

I've done it before with a 30 watt iron Just make sure to tin both the cover and the pup with a little solder first - that will make it a lot easier
the jayce Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 As I'm sure you know by now, I usually don't care to be as tactful and as diplomatic as . . . let's say . . . Fredzep was in answering your question. Especially when one solicits an opinion from me. That being said, I think it would look like shit with black pup rings. (I can now only hope that there is no one out there reading this with as similar guitar and black pup rings whom I may have offended) I would also immediately put slightly aged nickle covers on the pups . . . . and go with a Tone Pros nickle ABR1 and locking stop TP. That color and that top is beautiful . ... . "got plenty of vibe" Black rings and exposed bobbins just don't work for me. But , then, it's your guitar . . . not mine. I second that black rings would look terrible. Just my opinion. But then again it's only a couple bucks to mix and match but in the end I dont think anything will make that guitar look any better than it does right now. It's perfectly awsome just the way it is.
Guest mgoetting Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I decided to replace the cream ring and sell the H150. You can see the details in the For Sale section. It's certainly one of the best looking guitars I've ever seen, but I need to sell a few guitars. It has a thin neck and I generally play medium to fat ones. Plus this axe comes alive with high gain. It's fine for the whimpy jazz I play, but its heart is elsewhere. I appreciate the comments and will probably trim out my gold top with black rings.

High Flying Bird Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 For soldering the covers you will need a solder gun, not a soldering iron. You can get one cheap at Harbor Freight. It is still a job. Easier to put them on than to get one off. You really should dremel them off.

I have to go with Patrick on this one. The non-variable in this equation is the cream binding on the body & neck. The Customs (157) have black & white binding and therefore, black accessories. I also agree with Patrick on the aged Nickel covers and the TonePros AVR I bridge/tailpiece. However, I would go a step further and get the TonePros "lightweight Aluminum" T1ZSA tailpiece. They are both available from TonePros in aged Nickel as well if desired. To add pickup covers, you will need a soldering iron and solder the sides of the cover to the base of the pickups. A word of caution, first use lacquer thinner or something like it to remove oil/grease from the surface of the covers to be soldered and then use any type of tool to scratch the surface of the covers before soldering or the solder will not bond to the cover. Most manufacturers coat the covers with oil before shipping/packaging.
