Guest mgoetting Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I do better with a pickguard as a finger rest. I hate to drill a new guitar, but it does make a considerable difference in my playing. I have a cream PG lying around but wonder if there's something a little more attractive than the usual plastic without spending big bucks. Any suggestions?
FrankV Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I recently saw a photo of a guitar with a clear pickguard. Maybe it was plexiglass or some other material. You had to look twice to see it, and it let the top do the talking, so to speak. On some guitars the pickguard looks like part of the design, but on others it looks like it doesn't quite belong, visually, I mean. It's there to protect the top, and doesn't quite add to the look. On some they have the ones that blend in with the top, same color and wood grain, and on others it contrasts but compliments. Maybe get some cardboard in different colors and cut it to shape, and see what you like.
High Flying Bird Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Wow, ... that's awesome. I like for my guitars to look as old as I am.... 49ish. When I got Goldierocks she had black pup rings, black speed knobs and the standard "butter knife" Bigsby wiggler. Ren sent me cream pup rings free of charge. If you see this guitar in person it looks like it is an early 60's model. I think this one looks kinna' ole too. I would have never figured out to use the tele knobs but I like them. And yes, that is a dot on the switch tip.
yoslate Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 ... but it does make a considerable difference in my playing. There's your answer, right there. You want to look at it, or play it?
Guest mgoetting Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 That's the look! Where can I get that finish?

Hi Mark: I realize that you didn't solicit any opinions on this guitar . . . but I'm gonna make an observation and voice my opinion anyway. First off . . . it's a beauty. When I look at it, the way it is with the black selector switch tip and the black speed knobs, I think back to your question about the black pup rings on your 150. Then I think back to the VERY rare '57 Gibson LP gold tops with the black plastic as standard. This 170 would look fantastic with black pup rings to match the switch and knobs. Either that, or I would change out the knobs to the gold bonnets and the switch tip to a creme. Either change is very inexpensive and very easy. Hell, you could buy the parts and change every so often back n forth.
schundog Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I like the idea of all black on a goldtop, too. It seems to work for this guy; he's not much of a player, but he's been working on it....
FrankV Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 That's the very one Bird, awesome. And the 555 is a beaut too. It all comes down to personal preference, of course, but I am partial to silver hardware on just about all colors. I'm dreaming of a blue burst 150, with silver hardware and I was thinking, the black knobs with the white numbers? But now that I see the silver Tele knobs on yours I've got something else to mull over.

Guest mgoetting Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Call Ren. I'm afraid the voice on the phone will say, "Please insert 600 quarters."
