kbp810 Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 For no good reason other then simply not knowing how to ever leave well enough alone, I bought 602a's set of Manilus P90's to try out in my 575 They are humbucker sized P90's with a black plastic cover, so this has me thinking/worrying now how they are going to look over an antique natural finish with gold hardware... At first I was thinking something like an open hole gold cover like these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT but I'm not 100% sure if they'll actually fit... So that leaves me with just changing out the rings as the backup solution (which I planned on doing anyways as per the two hole Schallers in there now) Trying to decide what might look best... cream to match the binding or gold to match the hardware? Any thoughts or suggestions on which route to take? You all have a stake in this too, you have to look at it at PSPIV! Visual references:
602a Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Go to sale or trade for Sept. 4th and look at 150 Gold Top for sale and it shows what they looked like in my 150 with cream rings. Regular size H/B rings fit these also.
schundog Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 I vote for cream rings, but it's all just a personal preference; I'll bet that 575 sounds more like my 525 after the pickup change! Have fun with the project.

tulk1 Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 I'd go gold, basically reversing what you already have. And the rings would match the rest of the hardware.
kbp810 Posted September 25, 2010 Author Posted September 25, 2010 Can you get them tie dyed? Perfect! Why didn't I think of that! I searched and couldn't find any tie dyed... I did find neon green though! http://cgi.ebay.com/Guitar-Parts-SET-2-HUM...=item483c4b4f0f

Or even chrome collars if that is what your hardware is.

How do you switch them - push/pull pots? Did you consider the mounting rings with the buttons on that SD sell for these?

kbp810 Posted October 3, 2010 Author Posted October 3, 2010 Had a few delays in getting them installed... I had ordered a set of cream rings from e-bay and got burned... the picture showed a nice tall cream set, what arrived was two very thin yellow'ish rings Then I thought what the heck, why not try to make my own out of some leftover birdseye; and that didn't work out so well... tried cutting the first one with a dremmel, yeah, that was a really bad idea. Then I broke out the scroll saw... next one was just about done and then a big chunk chipped off followed by a split... gave it one more go and finally got one cut out right, started to do some sanding and guess what... it cracked! (this time it was a clean crack, so I probably could have gotten away with gluing it, but I was fed up by that time). I called a few music stores and finally came up with a pair of cream bridge rings - time to install! Many thanks to Steiner for great tip on working through the F-Holes - one so simple I can't beleive I didn't think of it before... tie a string around the pots! Made it a lot easier to do - still mildly nerve racking though, so I didn't think to take any pictures until the deed was already done
kbp810 Posted October 3, 2010 Author Posted October 3, 2010 Oh and almost forgot the most important part of all... They sound great! Neck seems a tad on the hot side, clear and bright, but not brittle; bridge sounds warmer and has a nice little snarl to it Very happy with the tone - thanks 602a!
Gitfiddler Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Wow, that turned out great! Nice work. I wish I had your skills.
Steiner Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Kbp810 That is one stellar looking 575! er, 525... Guitar May I be so lucky as to inspect the finished product?

Steiner Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Can I wear the badge that says Inspector 12? No matter, if I get to play it, I'll be in heaven!
