H Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 I'm very fond of my Tele, it's one of two guitars that I leave hanging on the wall (five kids - can't take the risk with the good ones). I love how it sounds and I realise that part of that sound is due to the longer scale it has compared to my Heritages and others. So, here are a couple of questions: are there any non-custom, long scale Heritage models? And can anyone tell me, as an example, what differences I would see and hear if I had two 535s, one 24.75 scale and the other 25.5 scale? I'm looking forward to some highly detailed answers!
skydog52 Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 www.heritageguitar.com Most of the hollow body Heritages are long scale. Check out the sight. I think it's really what type of music you are trying to play and what you are comfortable with sonically.

Hey SkyDog, I know I could look at the website but I'm bored and I wanted to provoke a little conversation on here. It's a bit quiet, don't you think?
GuitArtMan Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 They had a long scale 535 at Winter NAMM this year that Johnny Hilland couldn't put down.
smurph1 Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 i thought my 535 WAS Long Scale..Could be wrong..
High Flying Bird Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 i thought my 535 WAS Long Scale..Could be wrong.. Only your hair dresser knows for sure.............

Connor Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 I just measured three of my guitars with a tape measure. Here is what I found: My H 550 = 25.5 inches My '52 Reissue Tele = 25.5 inces My H 155 = 24.75 inches

That's obviously the guitar that the 150 series is emulating. The Teles and Strats are a true 25.5"
H Posted September 26, 2010 Author Posted September 26, 2010 I'll help out here a little with part of my question: it seems a lot of the hollowbody models - but not all - are 25.5. I can't answer the other bit though. So, what differences I would see and hear if I had two 535s, one 24.75 scale and the other 25.5 scale?

If you were able to see of hear any difference at all, you would be a better man than most. The main difference is going to be playability. I am starting to notice many of the older players with physical challanges . . arthritis, etc., are starting to look for the ES 350 type guitar with the shorter scale length for just that reason.
Poncho Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Hello All. I am the guy who bought the long scale 535 that is mentioned in this thread, It was the one at the NAMM show a few years ago. Of course it does matter what type music you play and your personal preferences, but for me, the long scale just has a bit more blues tone. I also like to "dig in" with the 11's I run on it, and the response just seems more suited to my style. Great thread.
High Flying Bird Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Hey Poncho. Welcome to the HOC. How about posting some pics of that 535?
Gitfiddler Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Was that a custom order or just a cool 535 built to test the market? Sounds interesting...WE NEED PHOTOS...please.
SouthpawGuy Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 NAMM 2010 The long scale 535 is at 2:30
koula901 Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 IMH, I think the wood and pups have more to do with the tone, than how long the the scale is. Typical Heritages made out of mahogany, tends to drink up more the highs than a strat or tele made out of alder or ash, which tend to produce brighter tones. Of course, there are many other factors as well.

Do you really thing 3/4 inch can affect sound? I know this has been discussed extensively here before and John (Kuz) has chimed in quite a bit about it. I think the longer scale affects the feel more than the sound. But what does a drummer know!!
rockabilly69 Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Sometimes due to longer scale the neck humbucker doesn't sound the same due to it not being in the same position. I've heard this said about longer scale PRS guitars. Specifically the pole pieces don't line up under the harmonic.
hinesarchtop Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Long scale is my first choice for jazz since it gives more room for chording, but I would never want a long scale LPaul style guitar. Long scale on Teles and Strats is the only way to go for me. I've built the long/short scale variants and think they feel better as designed. Rockabilly is right about scale and neck pickup placement. 24 fret guitars suck the fatness from a neck pickup.
drfie Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I have a 150 Special that Jay Wolfe had ordered as 25.5" scale. Either Jay ordered it that way or his customer backed out. The other custom features are black hardware and a 2 piece maple neck. Any way it was listed on his site and I bought it back in '06. I love it. It has Duncan 59 pups and of course being a special it has a poplar body. I think it sounds a bit like a tele, especially clean and in the middle pup switch position. But is that the wood, the scale, the pups or the neck? I'll leave to wiser men and women to tell me. dan
AP515 Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 IMO the longer scale doesn't chage tone, but does make bending harder. Makes me wonder how SRV did it with 13's on a Strat!
