eljay Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 hey, everyone! i'm sitting in an internet cafe on the south rim of the grand canyon, broken foot a-mending, while while my wife, bro. and sis-in-law hike down to phantom ranch. i "was" supposed to go, but cannot, of course. not complaining. gives me time to start threads of dubious value (except for entertainment), like this one! a couple days ago i visited the Heritage website and looked at finishes for a dream-in-progress. emerald green translucent--which i never paid attention to before--caught my eye and then captured my fancy! i'm warming up a lot to a 535 in this color. care to share a thought? dissenting opinions perfectly acceptable. have a good weekend, all, eljay
Dick Seacup Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I'm pretty sure Brentley had an emerald green tranny H-150 or -157 a couple of years back. The pics, as I recall, showed it as a pretty sweet color. I don't think I've ever owned a green guitar.
blueox Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I, for one, happen to like the idea and have been tempted by this one at Mojo's Music: H555

FredZepp Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Brents search for his Green 157 Brent's search goes on for the Green 157 that he once had... You missed this one that MM sold here...
Patrick Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I'll reluctantly add my impression/reply to your post. I'm reluctant because . . I know that my reply will be biased by my traditionalist taste in guitar finishes, and I do not mean to offend any. Custom colors belong on Strats. Hollow body and semi hollow body guitars should be either natural/blonde or traditional sunburst . . . including the slight deviation Heritage has come up with in colors like ALSB. The single exception to that, for me, would be a red semi hollow ala Lee Ritenour's trans red ES 335 dot board. But, as I told some else just yesterday, when it comes to guitar types and colors .. . . . I'm a rather boring traditionalist. But, I'm OK with that. If you like a trans green 535 . . . then no one else's opinion is relevant.
Guest mgoetting Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I saw this translucent black 535 on eBay recently that didn't sell. It was also on CL. The rosewood was light so the black and brown seemed to clash. I have a green translucent and I got used to it. The board is ebony- reflecting Brent's good taste when he ordered it. But rosewood would do nicely as well with that color. Patrick, you and I will differ on opinions about finishes. I like traditional finishes for full bodied guitars. Semis and solids seem ok in opaques as well as natural or bursts. I even like Fenders in natural. It seems like you lump the semis into the same camp as the bigguns. You can't go wrong with traditional finishes on any guitar.

H Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Doesn't put that 'buy me' feeling into the pit of my stomach like OSB does, I'm afraid. Part of me always thinks about how I could sell a guitar that I want to buy. In that sense, Patrick has a good point in saying that the traditional finishes will usually fare better with a wider section of buyers. Chacun a son gout, as the French say...
tulk1 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 TransGreen/Black/Blue/etc .... will be tough to move if ever you needed to. OSB - it'll always move. Just looks so classy. ALSB or DALSB will get 'em going, too. It just does something to the wood grain. With Natural and Amber close behind. But then, this isn't my guitar dream, so what I think matters not at all. If TransGreen moves ya, so be it.
FredZepp Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I like traditional finishes for full bodied guitars. <<< click Sorry for the hijack..not green... just some examples of non-traditional finishes...
eljay Posted October 8, 2010 Author Posted October 8, 2010 wow! i love all the komments, pro and con. in fact, this is very educational for me in that the color swatch on the H website comes off to me as a darkish forest green, while the pics of guitars y'all have posted show a much brighter green--way less attractive--than i envisioned. more to think about and it's so much fun! maybe i'll hafta 86 the green idea. other contenders are "natural" (to complement my 530's "antique natural") or chestnut sunburst. i saw at least one chestnut 535 in the HOC gallery and it is gorgeous! thank you for taking time to share!
Patrick Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 fredzep . . . they're undoubtedly beautiful guitars. Just doesn't quite work for me. When I bought my Guild/Benedetto Johnny Smith Award with the Benedetto "Opulent Brown" finish, there was another one avaialble in a shop in Calif. It was just as red as the Heritage JS and the guitar Vince is playing. It was on consignment from John Pisano. In fact, if you Google his name, you'll see amongst the pictures John Pisano photographed with the guitar. I could have bought it for $700 less than I paid for the Opulent Brown one that I eventually bought. Just didn't give me wood.

I believe that most of my guitars are a natural stain of some sort or vintage inspired. But I do love the way the red looks next to the Rose inlay on the Johnny Smith. For me, it's nice to have some that are just a bit different..
peteraltongreen Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Hi eljay. Lucky you on the south rim of the Grand Canyon,I enjoyed both my trips there. Now,Green guitars ( I have an unused website called greenguitars.com ) I have a 1964 Epiphone Sorrento in Royal Olive. This finish is one of my favourites. It always looks stunning.I've never quite made it with Emerald green, although some of the examples shown are stunning.Royal Olive starts a sagey green colour, and blends into a straw yellow colour.Heritage would do a killer finish like this.Live your dream ! Peter Alton Green.
jjkrause84 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 On a 150, yes (a tribute to Peter Green, i na weird way....)....on a 535, no. To me a 535 should not really be 'flashy' but 'Earthy', if that makes sense. Brown is the best 535 colour for me.
Kuz Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I like guitars that are a little different, one-offs, unique, ect. They say "This is my guitar, not some big known-name guy". I think trans-green is bad a$$!!! If/When Brent ever gets that Trans-green 150 back, you know I am saving my pennies for when he sells it the next month!!!

Think about living with a guitar in that sort of finish, over time. The traditional finishes are just that for a reason. And, as Kenny allowed, when "The Thrill Is Gone," you'll take a hit on it.
mark555 Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Not a finish that I would invest a couple of thousand pounds in, I am sure no one here in England would buy it if it was ever sold. But if you are buying it as one to keep for good, then I am with Kuz on this that I think it's great that there are individuals who buy what they want and do not follow the crowd. At least where you are in America, you will not pay an over inflated price for it. A tone or two darker in colour might just make the green better, the beauty of Heritage is that they will produce what the customer asks for.
Millennium Maestro Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 I have a slightly different twist on the whole green thing, just recently sold a 535 to a guy.. the guitar was gorgeous, he bought it right away at first sight and has sent me messages since praising the instrument, color and the deal. Emerald green is a dark and deep color in person, photos tend to need good light or flash to detail the wood below! On stage the color has a more chameleon appearance... which I really dig. It is dark enough to appear black at times. As far as resale, initially someone might step back because it is different and there are traditionalists, but... Once someone plays a well setup guitar the instrument does all the talking. My own personal opinion is I love to own something not everyone has or can find!! Different strokes.
