Guest HRB853370 Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 This is funny, but after 1 1/2 months of ownership, I just noticed that there is no strap button on my 550! Does this mean that I am supposed to play it sitting down all the time? I don't mind doing that, as I enjoy it in my lap, being a large bodied guitar. But....what if I want to stand up, does Heritage leave this little detail to the customer?
Dick Seacup Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 In short, "Yes." The factory site used to have a "suggested strap button installation" picture. Not sure if they still have it or not.
kbp810 Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 My 575 was sort of the same way... except that the input jack doubled as the back strap button I installed a button in the center of the heal of the neck - I'd post a picture of it, but it's currently out on vacation (as in, currently with a Luthier for a fret level and setup) I do have a picture of the input jack side though:
kbp810 Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Strike that... Here's a picture of the strap button on my 445 - essentially the same spot as my 575.
Teeky Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Strike that... Here's a picture of the strap button on my 445 - essentially the same spot as my 575. I didn't realize the positions varied so much. Here's a pic of the strap botton on my 575. I thought it was a strange placing originally as at this end the strap has to be fitted back to front so it hangs right. It's very comfortable though and I now think it's an ideal position. Teeky
Bluzman54 Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Interesting.... My first Heritage was a 550 that I purchased new from Wolfe's......it had strap buttons. Was mine a fluke? Jim C
Guest HRB853370 Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I am NOT drilling any holes in my beloved 550. I am sure I could get a qualified guitar tech to do this operation. OR, if I happened to be in K'zoo, I wonder if the boyz at HGC might do it for me.
ronalr Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I had a luthier add one to my 575...just like the Heritage picture to the left ....I would not try that my self either....he did a great job and it looks like it came from the factory that way.....will have to take a picture of it with the new strap button....but here it is
Hfan Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Heritage used to have a recommended procedure and location for installing strap buttons listed on their website. I think I copied it to an old pc of mine that bit the dust but if you want it I think I have it on a external hard drive I used to back my files up to. Let me know if you want it, I'll try to dig it up.
Kuz Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I would really contact Jay Wolfe first!!! I bought my 575 Custom from him and he recommend the EXACT OPPOSITE of the Heritage web pic for the strap button. He assured me the guitar would lay perfect with the strap on, and said the body is more stable for a screw to be inserted than the neck. I play most of the time standing with my 575 and it plays/hangs perfectly!!! Click to enlarge this pic and you can see where Wolfe put the strap button.
Guest mgoetting Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Well, it's pretty damned easy to put a hole in the right spot. Still, I was reluctant to do it myself. Pete Moreno did one for me. I watched him and he told me how to do it. He charged me $2 for the work and the button. Ren did the next one. Same deal only no charge at all. The trick is drill size and hole placement. Depth depends on the screw. Some recommend soap or wax for the screw. I've sometimes used a little dab of lemon oil if nothing else is handy. Just be careful and take your time. It really is about a two minute job max.
