I'm adding a tone pot to a single pup guitar with only a volume pot. It's a Heritage Floating #3. Does anyone have the instructions? Thanks.

Mark: If your thinking of putting a tone control on your newly acquired Johnny Smith .. . you shouldn't be looking for instructions to do so. You should be recalling the driving directions to the Heritage plant. Bring the Johnny in to Ren, look him right in the eye and tell him . . . Ren, there is no one on the planet that I would let touch this guitar other than you!!" He'll give you a smile and a wink, thank you for your unadulterated bullshit . . then he'll take the guitar out of your hands and do the job correctly the first time. If you find yourself needing instructions to do something . . . that should be the first sign of needing passing the chore on to someone competent. You wouldn't expect ol' Ren to read some instructions sheet, then proceed to give someone consultative therapy on sleep disorders . . . . would you???

Tone control on the JS? Hmm... There's a thought. I'll have that installed while they're put the Bigsby on it!

Actually, I'm adding the tone control to an Eagle.

Don't worry, I would not touch the JS.

So, how do I do the wiring? Ren sketched it out for me a few months ago but I've lost it.

Hi Mark,

Have a look on the Seymour Duncan site, they have wiring diagrams for lots of combinations and this may be there too.

Somebody makes a tone pot for this that mounts under the pick guard. The edge of the pots wheel sticks out from under the pick guard just enough to use.

The PG wheel isn't a bad way to go. I just need to know where to put the solder!

I checked StewMac and found the type of pot you need. The company that makes them, this is gold to me, is called Schatten. As in, "..he has schatten himself."

Instructions included on their site in PDF. Follow these instructions closely. I would hate to hear you cracked the pick guard and shat yourself. :aggressive_mini:

That helps. But I need a little more.

I already have a volume pot on the guard. How do I add the 500K pot? There should be a capacitor linking them, right?

Thanks.

Is this the same capacitor I need for Floating #3 humbucker?

Caps are a personal taste thing really but a lot of the time humbuckers are teamed with .047 caps. However, I've seen .022 and intermediate values used too. Ren should be able to give guidance on this

I understand the wiring nnow and the 0.047 cap should be the best for the pup. It looks like a manageable job but...

I decided to take advantage of living in Kazoo and let the pros do it. Thumbs down on the tone wheel. Another hole in the PG, but there's plenty of space.
