AnH555 Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 A bird in hand is worth...well, you would know. That thing just screams quality. Congrats, Ron
jmc7581 Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Whoa whoa whoa, baby. Like a couple of others, I've never been a Firebird fan, but that thing is just extraordinary. What a finish! It glows. Man ...
Patrick Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 That is a classic beauty!! They build'em today .. . the old fashion way!!!
tulk1 Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Ron, Mr. Lamb must kinda like you ... just a bit! And you know he watched that guitar all the way thru the build. Got a little misty looking at the pics, thinking what went into that build. What a beauty. And I see you found your Kodachrome okay.
skydog52 Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Congrats Ron. That is a great build and the color came out great. Enjoy playing that bad boy. Maybe a little slide?
chico Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 outstanding. and to think, we saw it getting pieced together! skydog is right, I'm thinkn slide too... man.. have fun tonight
High Flying Bird Posted October 22, 2010 Author Posted October 22, 2010 A little slide may be in order. Look out bats!
LK155 Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Hey Ron, What a prize! I told Marg about your dog/peach pit comment and she wanted to know why the dog would ever be in that situation to begin with. I had to tell her it was probably an Alabama dog. Beancounters............ That picture of Marv with the raw pieces is priceless. Congratulations on your NGD and enjoy. Lyle
koula901 Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Bird, That's kind of like, neck-through construction, right? Did you think of those blonde stripes and ask Heritage to do that?
JohnCovach Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 It is true that you really have to tighten the strings down at the tuner, but once you get the hang of it, the 20:1 gear ratio makes fine-tuning a breeze.
Kuz Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Yea, I guess they did a "good" job..... Dude, that guitar IS OFF THE FREAKIN' HOOK!!!!!! One of the greatest Heritages of all time!!!! AND just so you will never sell it (because I WON'T LET YOU)..... I claim DIBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
schundog Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Beautiful Axe, Bird!! Enjoy in good health!!
TalismanRich Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 That thing came out better anyone could have imagined. The color on it is flat out STUNNING! You surely must be one proud papa.
big bob Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I asked for a tone report,....... so the Bird called me and played through the phone.. sounded great, and sounded like he was having one hell of a new guitar day..
High Flying Bird Posted October 23, 2010 Author Posted October 23, 2010 It is true that you really have to tighten the strings down at the tuner, but once you get the hang of it, the 20:1 gear ratio makes fine-tuning a breeze. Big Bob called me this afternoon and told me the same thing you are saying. I would have liked those tuners. I should have used the forum and got the true skinny.
JohnCovach Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Ah, no biggie--you can always add them later if you want. It's far more of an issue with the Firebirds, because those banjo tuners are not very usable. I also had to swap out the stock pickups for Lollar Firebird pickups, which are a vast improvement. By contrast, you got a guitar that was terrific right out of the box!!
High Flying Bird Posted October 23, 2010 Author Posted October 23, 2010 I didn't change the strings but I will tomorrow. The factory strings are tight feeling - not as flexible as the DR Pure Blues. The tail piece was too low so I raised it. That gave some relief from the string tightness but not enough. I loosened the nut a quarter turn which I always do. Tomorrow when I change the strings I will raise the 1st string side of the bridge just a hair. This will help with slide and I like to get my fingers under the stings when I bend. Tonight I played through an Ampeg Jet and a Fender Champ 12. The Phat Cats are strange pups. The volume doesn't seem to die as quick as you would think but the tone changes more than you would expect. I like that. They are clean and quite but you can let the amp work for you some and get some late 60's sounds like Big Brother, Jefferson Airplane or Stephen Stills. It plays like a warped SG. A lot of bass but not to the point of clouding the pups. On the neck pup, with a clean amp, you can get a fat jazz sound. I didn't expect that. I think the pups are the most versatile pick ups I have ever used. I think they would sound good in any guitar. The fretboard is so wide I can hardly play the thing. God has smiled on me. The neck carve is thin, not as thin as some Heritages I have owned but well within the tolerance of my hands. Honestly I wouldn't care if it were any thinner. It is thin enough by far. The finish... oh my, the finish. I didn't have time today to get photos that did the finish justice. It flashes in the light just like a high flying redtail hawk back lit by the sun.... one of my favorite sights. That is what I wanted. That is just what I got. The finish looks so deep that you could stick your arms into it past your elbows. Tomorrow night we will see what it can do at Joes. We can really crank it up there..... and I suspect we will do just that. I lay on the steps of 225 Parsons and attempt to touch the hem of Marvin Lamb's garment as he leaves the building. My sweet lord... what a piece of art! Next year at PSP4 I will follow Marv around, holding my firebird over my head, yelling, "This is his sign!" I ain't good enough for this guitar. What a shame! I guess I had better do something about that.
yoslate Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Late to piling on here, Ron. Busy day and a gig tonight; just got home. My word! More beautiful than I could have imagined. Tortoise Shell pick guard?
brentrocks Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Damm Ron...that is friggin SWEET!!! Now i know why you sounded so excited on the phone...i would have been the same way! I think a tortise P/G would look great.
yoslate Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 What do you think daddy? Tortoise Shell pick guard? The black looks really nice, though. Tortoise shell might be very cool, but only if the colors work with the guitar...the colors would have to be spot on, and tortoise appears in a wide variety of looks. Laminated, bwb, might be cool, as well. But make no mistake, that really is one of the finest Heritages I have ever seen. Congrats again, my boy!
Thundersteel Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Another fine masterpiece from Kalamazoo! Congrats, Ron!
SouthpawGuy Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Looks like Heritage hit another home run with this baby ! Congrats on a very fine guitar.
