Halowords Posted October 28, 2010 Author Posted October 28, 2010 blended heel? Only issue I can really think would be redesigning the neck joint. That might be just a bit expensive. I don't know what it would actually entail, would probably depend on the design. I'm thinking more like what Hamer does. In that design, I think it still attaches the same way, no surface area is lost or anything, but it is the natural curve of the neck pretty much up to (or very close to) the body of the guitar. The old Carvin DC's were pretty different, but in a pretty intelligent way. Still, I would think THAT would be more expensive/elaborate to do since it would be a pretty different design than what Hamer is doing for instance. Hmm...I've always wanted to go for a heritage custom build. But I'm notoriously indecisive. I don't think "make it look awesome and sound sweet" would be enough to go on. I am actually cool with that. To me, it would be cool to sort of let them know what I like but give them the freedom to use that as inspiration but still do what is right by their aesthetics & craft. I also think (just for me, at least), it's a nice buffer between me thinking something is cool and somebody who actually knows what they're doing being able to more accurately assess if it is really the awesome idea I think it is. I can see your point, but I'm so indecisive having somebody to run my crazy ideas through helps keep me from doing the paralysis by analysis thing. -Cheers
Halowords Posted October 28, 2010 Author Posted October 28, 2010 Since this thread still seems viable . . . I think I am wanting a custom Heritage. I might break down and try to find both a nice used one AND get a custom job (how I went from wanting one to wanting two including a custom job is beyond me) just because there are a few different sounds and specs I'd like eventually. Anyway . . . What options are your can't-live-without features for a custom guitar? I'm both curious to see what others have done, plus get ideas for my own order. FWIW I'm thinking of having a custom made Prospect, or an H-535, but I'd be curious your opinions on options to die for in any model. -Cheers

I did ask for a specific case, but was told they couldn't guarantee that.
big bob Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 This thread was VERY insightful, should I ever choose to walk down that road. I do have one question, having never attended a PSP event yet-this person Kate, sounds like she is the HIGHER AUTHORITY when it comes to building custom guitars! All the Heritage employees are higher authority's when it comes to custom guitars, but Marv Lamb would be the one to call and talk to.
brentrocks Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I am gonna butt in here and give my 2 centavos.... I custom ordered a H 137 DC DLX earlier this year and it was one of the best guitar buying moves i have ever made!!! I personally speced the guitar out with Vince...we ran it thorough a local dealer, it was done in 9 weeks!!!! Hallowords...WELCOMEE!!!! Now is a great time for a custom order HERITAGE!!!! wait times are low, quality is high....and the mojo of your own custom build out of 225 Parsons St will have you reelin in guitars virtual "cloud 9" for yrs to come!!!!! DO IT MAN!!!! heres my 137...food for thought!!!!
Kuz Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Hi, Kuz! What is the color on your 575 that you have pictured? Is it antique natural? Is it lighter in bright light? Love that it shows all of the figure! Thanks!- Charles Bevell Sorry I missed this.... My 575 is "Golden Amber" and it looks like the picture. Thanks

DO IT MAN!!!! heres my 137...food for thought!!!! ENABLER!!!!!!! But yeah, I actually sent in my planned specs to see if what I've got in mind is workable. It's nothing too outlandish, and I still need to decide between a Prospect (which I'm, much to my surprise all things considered, leaning toward) and an H-535. Kind of a big thing to know before they can actually, y'know, build the thing. But I think it will be doable, and I'm getting pretty excited about it. It might actually end up a dirty-blonde black-and-tan version if tulk1's Prospect. I used most of his specs, inquired about split-block inlays, my thoughts on the finish I've got in mind, and a few other tweaks or options I'm considering. Now just to hear their thoughts on what they might change, what seems impractical, and then get a quote. After that, I'll have to order it and wait at the front door for it to come all Scott Pilgrim-like. -Cheers
Spectrum13 Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Halo, You may wish to check out my custom Prospect. Go to my members gallery and look under all photo's posted. Tulk1's Prospect and mine had some similar options and some different.

This one? http://www.heritageownersclub.com/forums/index.php?/gallery/image/1993-09-prospect-w-p90s/ It's nice, regardless of whether that's the one you were talking about. Anything specific feature-wise you especially liked? I do like that Dark Almond Sunburst (and similar, not totally sure that's the finish in the picture above or just in the same vein) . . . I'll probably go with the Black-and-Blonde look if they think it's workable because I already have a DASB finished H-150, but that dark brown antiquated-looking finish just seems very professional & inviting. Pretty sweet! -Cheers

Halowords Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 For sure on that!! Yours is what gave me the GAS to get mine. You can see it in the Gallery Here. Yeah, that Prospect GAS must be like some virus that gets passed on. I really like yours (well, both of yours). The finish on both turned out gorgeous. I like that warm, rich, dark chocolate brown sorta finish a lot. I'm actually excited/nervous if I go through with this to see how it turns out. I think all of my requests are pretty doable, and I think the finish if it gets approved and turns out like I'm thinking, will be absolutely stunning (nothing that hasn't been done, or at least closely done, before, but I think it will really fit my aesthetics). So I haven't even gotten approval of the specs, much less ordered it, but I'm already dreaming of this awesome, full, rich sounding guitar with a comfortable-yet-playable neck, push/pull knobs for coil-splitting & out-of-phase options, classy split-block inlays, and a beautiful reverse-brindle sort of finish I've been picturing in my head for weeks now. Crap. -Cheers

I had considered blocks, traps and a bound headstock. Could-a-should-a

I had considered blocks, traps and a bound headstock. Could-a-should-a I don't know (but I am pretty sure they won't) use a ABR-1 bridge. But call Heritage to make sure. I have never seen a Heritage with an ABR-1 bridge. But here an enabling pic of the first ever 535 P-90 production guitar...

Faber locking and Heritage installed their stainless deep posts too.
rooster Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 When I ordered my black-and-tan H150 through Wolfe, I specified the neck profile and the wood for the top (the plainest, most boring piece of maple in the shop -- I reasoned it would add a bit of "chirp", and I wasn't wrong). I sent them the pickups (Bill Lawrence L-500s, Bill, Becky, and Shannon, not the "BL USA" stuff) to be installed, and I got the nicest guitar I've ever played. I left most of the details up to them, as the H150 is about as good as you can get anyway. It was built in less than 6 months, and my price from Wolfe was about what they normally run. I paid a bit over his usual, but I don't regret a dime of it. Money comes and goes, but an instrument like that is once-in-a-lifetime. Battle scars and all. rooster.
