needane Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Had a buddy ask about brass nut install on 555, he has played old 335crr of mine and thought he might like the brighter edge, and I sure someone here has tried it. What's the change if any, better or ?. I agree with most that it is better left alone.
schundog Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I would think the maple neck/ebony board on a 555 would be bright enough, but if he wants to try it, it's not like it's irreversible.. Just a pain to change it back. (Or in my case, another trip and $$ to my tech..)
smurph1 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Eons ago, I had a pawnshop special that had a brass nut on it..I kinda liked it..Lots of sustain..The guitar had humbuckers and a coil splitter, so it was very versatile..But I ended up giving it to my nephew, who proceeded to destroy it..Oh well..
koula901 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Wow, Smurph, that sounds like a great guitar!
GuitArtMan Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 He grew up in the '70s didn't he? Brass nuts, brass bridges, metal sustain blocks in the body, these were all the rage in the '70s. That and bell bottoms...
Spectrum13 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Not sure brass nuts are the best way to brighten up a 555 unless he plays open strings much. Are the bridge and saddles brass, nickel or steel and what are the volume and tone pot values?
smurph1 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Wow, Smurph, that sounds like a great guitar! Yeah..It was..sniff sniff..

That and bell bottoms... thru a good chunk of the '80's, too. i had a Carvin DC150 stereo, all maple, brass hardware, incl. nut. way too bright

Are the bridge and saddles brass, nickel or steel and what are the volume and tone pot values? I agree, a more logical response to an attempt to brighten a 555 is elsewhere . Brass nut comes into play on open strings, but pickups , pots and caps are where the real answers are.
Gitfiddler Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Ibanez uses a split Bone/Brass nut on all of their Benson models as well as the semi-hollow Scofield JSM100. Both of those artists were very involved with their signature models, so they may be onto something. In their guitars, the Bone half faces the headstock and the Brass half faces the strings. It does brighten up the tone a bit, but as stated, only when playing open notes.
