unikh550 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Can anyone tell me which Heritage finish is the closest to those on the highly flamed "tiger maple" '58-59 Les Pauls? Would it be Antique Cherryburst or the Light Almondburst (as opposed to the Dark Almondburst)- or something else? Those seem to be the two closest, from what I see in the Gallery. Thanks.- Chuck
TalismanRich Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I think that Vintage Sunburst would be the closest thing to the current appearance of a 58-60 burst. The red in the original burst was an analine dye which is susceptible to fade under UV light. That burns out the red appearance that was originally there. What you are left with is a fade from the yellowish center to the brownish edge. The Cherry Burst would be much redder than what a 59 would look like. Almond SB is more brown. Here's FredZep's Vintage Burst 150 Here's my Almond Sunburst 157 Of course all the finishes are done by hand and will vary somewhat.
golferwave Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I agree with the Vintage sunburst (VSB) with the right tinting it's a dead ringer for a faded 50's burst.
tulk1 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 VSB on my Peter Green tribute guitar, "Greeny" Mmmmmm, one of my favorites!! John, Rob says my Millie NFH is very close to a '50s tiger flame burst. What do you think? Can't say as I've ever even cared what a '50s LP looked like. I just want one.
mark555 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 the onnly problem is, a vintage burst could be any one of a number of colours and shades depending on where it is in it's journey through the nitro effect. Personally, just give me a completely faded out lemon drop, and that to me would be perfection.
big bob Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 The vintage bursts we all love, started life as bursts we can buy. What made them "vintage was poor quality dye that faded as it aged. The thing I think is super funny is that the vintage "Ice Tea" style bursts actually started life as the much hated "Clown Bursts".. Remember people DON'T HATE ON THE CLOWN! This would be VSB or "ice tea"

Patrick Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 VSB on my Peter Green tribute guitar, "Greeny" That's a serious top!! I know I mentioned it before, but the knob thing would keep me up at night. I think I remember you saying that's how Peter Green's guitar was set up.

I think I remember you saying that's how Peter Green's guitar was set up. You'd never notice those knobs when playing it. Well, rather, I didn't notice those knobs when playing it. One of my fav 150s, even in the center toggle position .........
NoNameBand Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Hey Fred, let me know if you ever decide to sell that VSB 150. Its a beauty. I'm dyin for one. I'm talking to myself. I need to be patient. Talk about GAS.

I think I remember you saying that's how Peter Green's guitar was set up. Yes, that is how Peter Green had his, but right after that pic was taken (and it was taken as soon as I recieved the guitar), I switched it back to all amber bell knobs like it came with. Personally, I don't like reflector knobs. Greeny has been in her original Heritage form since after that pic, and I like the way it looks better with all amber bell knobs like in pictures 1 & 2. Thanks for the compliments.
unikh550 Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 Talisman Rich's Almond sunburst is exactly what I had in mind, although Jim French of Heritage said that VSB goes well on H-550's.Thanks, everyone!- Charles

FredZepp Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Just because I love posting Heritage porn....
Gitfiddler Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 If I ever were to custom order a solid body Heritage, it would be in Vintage Burst. This thread is feeding an already out of control Heritage addict. Just what I need...another gitfiddle!
H Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I've got to take some better pics of mine - it always looks a bit orange when I photograph it but in the flesh it's the same colour as FredZepp's and SlappyTappy's. Now it's pretty much winter in the UK and we're back on GMT, daylight and sun are in short supply for guitar pics. Anyone got good advice on indoor lighting which will bring out the true colour?
Patrick Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 My burst is pretty vintage lookin. Real nice guitar!! You must be in love with that one. I agree on the vintage look. It's definitely got it.
blues Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Here are some original bursts The third pic does not due justice due to the angle.
Patrick Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Here are some original bursts The third pic does not due justice due to the angle. Thanks for this post and the photos. These were obviously taken at a guitar show. Mind if I ask which show it was? Buy the way . . the next to the last photo . . the one with the guitar lying down in its case . . . not the one with the Bigsby . . the one with the stop TP . . . . that's what it's all about man. That's pure heaven!
FredZepp Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 If a Burst has a lot of red still left on its top, usually it is a 1960, made after they changed from the infamous fading red. Example of a lot of red in pictures #2 and #4 there. While there are a handfull of '58 and '59's that didn't see much sunlight in the last 50 years, most have faded to the desirable faded bursts or lemondrop or un-bursts. I have tons of books with this kind of porn in them, so I was unsure if I should get another... but I did. I bought "The Beauty of the Burst" , which is well known here. It has fantastic porn and some great detailed measurements. They do not represent the plain tops in it , which I like also, but the pics are great porn and I recommend it highly.
