Guest HRB853370 Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 This has probably been addressed before, but what is a safe and gentle way to remove imbedded tarnish on the goldplated pickup covers on my 575? I tried rubbing gently with a shoe cloth, but it does not remove it. I am concerned about removing the plating.
DetroitBlues Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Ketchup. Put a dime sized drop on a plate, use a paper towel to dab a small amount and rub it on, then wipe off.

602a Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Don't leave on too long the viniger will discolor it. Viniger is a real good way to age pup cover too.
Kuz Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 Honestly, you can't un-tarnish gold. Chrome or Nickel will clean up, but rubbing the gold with a metal polish will make it tarnish more. (Yea, trust me I tried it, boo hoo). The best thing is preventive maintenance by using a clothe when turning the tuning pegs (if they are gold) and gently wiping the sweat or moisture off the pickups with a dry clean polish clothe after playing. But the gold luster can't be buffed back.
tbonesullivan Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 the problem is that it's not really tarnish on the gold.. it's where the gold has worn through and the metal underneath has started to tarnish. Gold hardware is the hands-down least resistant hardware. Nickel is next, but only chrome really endures over the long term. SO, keep the hardware clean, and wipe it down, but it'll age no matter what you do.
