Halowords Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I should get my H-150 back today w/ Sheptones & Pagebucker wiring, and eventually plan on doing the same (hopefully myself if I can figure out the wiring diagrams) with a semi-hollow as I've got a couple currently lying around. At any rate, with the Sheptones, Jeff was nice enough to send some extra Alnico magnets so I could try them and swap in different kinds. I know I can (and ultimately will) swap the different magnets and let my ears decide what's right for the individual guitars, and as I understand it, the V's are a bit hotter or brighter than say the II's. All that aside, is there any reading material out there, or any info/experience you guys feel like sharing, that might help a poor sap such as me decide on what might be the best fit, what to expect look for when I test out the different magnets, or some clue as far as how they tend to be used, why, or any other factors to consider? Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. Be sure to mark your magnets with indelible pens when you remove them, marking the type and the edge facing the pole screws. If you purchase magnets online, be aware that the dimensions can be different from vendor to vendor and alnicos are next to impossible to cut without shattering, unless you have specialized tooling. The magnets have to be kept cool (water bath) during the cutting process and they will dull a generic tool in a hurry. Need to read this Electro-Magnetic Guitar Pickups Contrary to general belief, the Alnico number doesn't correspond to magnetic strength but to the alloy number. Be sure to try Alnico IV magnets, weaker than Alnico II

I'll let you know once I get it back. I hate to be impatient, but I could have probably figured out the wiring and got it done a long time ago myself (Torres' diagram didn't match Seymour Duncan's and I thought it'd be a quick & easy thing for a full-time guitar tech to do but I guess he was busy). Anyway, just waiting for it to arrive so I can go over and pick her up then I'll let you know. At this rate, they'll be practically naturally reliced by the time I actually get to play them in my guitar, but that's mostly my fault (and my diehard commitment to being a good dad and hanging out with my daughter). But I digress. I think Jeff from Sheptones sent Alnico II's and V's, not sure there were any other magnets included but I'll obviously check whenever the guitar's in hand so I can actually use the things. I'll jot down my thoughts and gladly listen to others' ideas.
