ingeneri Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Long promised, and long delayed due to computer ineptitude. Here are some shots of the 575 I modded with Lollars: Also, the first three tracks on my Myspace page were recorded with this guitar. Hope you enjoy.
golferwave Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Very nice! I really like the natural finish.
tulk1 Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 A blonde 575, with P90s - says Jazz just looking at it! Wonderful pics.
schundog Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 The grain on the back of that thing is gorgeous!
Gitfiddler Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 OK, Ingeneri, you are not usually one to tease us. But what a tease! Please take us through this conversion to Lollars from the beginning. I did say please.
ingeneri Posted December 20, 2010 Author Posted December 20, 2010 This is a project that grew out of seeing a similar mod done swapping Alnicos on a Gibbie L4 I saw at the playjazzguitar forum a few years ago. I originally called Wolfe, but he told me Heritge wouldn't do a 575 with P-90s. So, I called Lollar about how to go about a do it yourself conversion. Lollar sells a set of shims that go in the humbucker sized wholes. The P-90s then go on top of these and are screwed into the top as normal. There is a thick shim and a thin shim and you have to measure string height to determine which. If memory serves, I used a thin at the neck and a thick at the bridge. The mod was done at the Guitar Shop in DC, with Lollar advising the tech through the process over the phone. I haven't heard any discernable difference in the acoustic tone from the mod. Electrically, I find the carved 575 is brighter than the typical 175 laminate sound (in a good way). The P-90s definitely make a difference though, as you get more of that single coil 50's jazz tone than with the humbuckers. Maxed with a Fender tube amp, and it's pure Blue Note tone heaven. As I noted above, you can hear the P-90s for yourself in the recordings for In a Mellow Tone, Watermelon Man, and Little Chippie at http://www.myspace.com/ingeneri
Gitfiddler Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Thanks, Ingeneri. I've listened to your tracks and they are fantastic. The tone, even as compressed on the web, is very similar to that of my H525 with flatwounds. However, for some reason, my playing comes nowhere near your accomplished jazz chops. Time for me to go pracitice!
barrymclark Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 I'm still trying to write that how-to book on how to get as good as Ingeneri without talent or practice. Hit a wall tho at the part about lacking talent and not practicing. Must be writer's block.
111518 Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Very nice tone, and very nice playing ...not to mention a very cool looking-guitar.
ingeneri Posted February 11, 2011 Author Posted February 11, 2011 For those interested in this guitar, I am selling it for $1,500 to finance buying a 525. Full details are in the For Sale/Trade section. Feel free to PM me as well for more details.
je00143 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 out of curiosity, which amp were you using (saw a Fender in the background) and which mic did you use?? Lovely tone….

I'm playing In a Mellow Tone through a Fender DRRI, Watermelon Man and Little Chippie were using the original 8" speaker Jazzkat. The recordings were done with a Zoom H2 portable recorder.
