Hi Everyone,

My wife recently bought me a Marshall JCM2000 TSL 100 for my birthday-wow!  It is my first tube amp.  I play an Epiphone Les Paul through it mostly and have been happy.  But you always here about the classic combination of a Les Paul and Marshall tube amp.  I play mostly 80's metal.  I have just started to look into buying another guitar, and I recently walked into a new local music shop.  They are selling Heritage guitars and amps.  I played a H-150? for a little while and loved the quality, weight and clarity.  But I didn't get to push it through my amp.  So I need your advice.  First, is the Heritage what I am looking for?  I'm hoping it is, because I have read alot about the quality of Gibson declining, and figured I would have to buy an expensive used Les Paul.  Secondly, which model would you recommend?  I have noticed there seems to be two choices on pickups-so which would you recommend?  Here is hoping that I am on this forum for a long time, with a new Heritage in hand!  Thanks

I think you picked up the right model.  I used my 150 for hard rock covers with nooooo issues at all.  I did swap the bridge pup for a a DiMarzio Super Distortion, but I could have kept it stock.  If you can find one with Duncans that'll work, too.  The 150 is a great hard rock guitar.

A good tube amp is the only way to go in my opinion.  A pound per watt is our rule of thumb.  A buddy has a large Marshall head and his H-150 sounds righteous through it.  I prefer Fender amps but that is my taste.

OK, you like the 80's stuff, same goes for old Rock played on Les Pauls, the heavier the better with an H-150 or Les Paul.  The more the thing weighs the better sustain and tone.  At least that has been our experience with Les Paul type guitars.  I sold an H-150 to a friend a long time ago.  It was black and weighed just under 10 pounds.  It was the first guitar that I felt was more than a guitar, it was an instrument.  Heritage made two of these and Roy Clark got first pick and I got the other.  We figured that mine was too heavy for him.  (my brush with greatness.)  Now I play 535s.  I like the hollow body tone and weight better.  A lighter solid body will give you a different tone, more like an LP jr or SG.  If you want a Les Paul through a Marshall sound you can't do better than an H-150.

Gibson started going down hill when they moved from Kalamazoo.  It is nothing new.  I was in their factory store in Nashville a few months ago.  They had some pretty guitars but they didn't look or play as good as all of our Heritages do.  The guy asked me if I was interested in a Les Paul.  I told him that I was Heritage poor.  (that's the truth!)  I was in enemy territory.  Me and my buddies have 7 Heritages between us.  None of them have any finishing issues.  All of them are great playing and sounding guitars.  We may not be able to play for shi...., well you know, but our tone is great.

Get that Heritage...and a back brace.  I extend my first and forth finger over my head like Beavus and Butthead as I think how good it will sound.  ;)

First off...Welcome to the Club!

Until the factory decides to make an announcement about the supposed ownership changes, you know that the H-150 that you played was built, and is still being built, by the same people who were responsible for those really expensive, extremely rare Les Pauls.  If you want Les Paul through Marshall, there isn't anyway I can think of, outside of extremely bad luck and poor pickup choices, that you won't get it with an H-150.

As to which model, well, the way I think about the lineup (and I could be wrong, in which case someone will jump in...heh)...the H137 is like a Les Paul Special (slabtop), the H140 is like a thinner, lighter Les Paul Standard, the H150 is like a Les Paul Standard, the H157 is like a Les Paul Custom.  You can find more model information (although the list looks incomplete) on the Info page off the main site.

Good luck and make sure you post some pr0n once you make your purchase.  You know you're going to! ;)

Thanks for the info and encouragement guys!  One more question....  I noticed the H-150 CM Classic has Seymour Duncans, the H-150Cm has humbuckers, and the H-150Cm Ultra has HRW premium humbuckers.  Which pickups (or which version of the 150) will help me get to my sound (80's metal/rock with distortion and sustain)?  I'm dying to go buy one!!

Welcome!

I play my H157 through my Marshall, and it sounds great! However, I have the DSL50. To me, 50 watts is still way too much power! A lot of people actually think it sounds better than their 100-watt brethren because it "breaks up" sooner.

You may want to get an attenuator between your head and speakers, so you can get the "true" Marshall sound at low volumes. Rock & Roll!

Gitfidler--yeah but she is crazy (like night and day).  And Thundersteel, I am definitely going to get a hotplate.  It was going to be my next purchase until I saw the Heritage.  So is there a difference in the chrome plated humbuckers, the Seymour Duncans, and the HRW premium humbuckers?  The louder and meaner the better!

I had the SDs in my H157; swapped them out for HRWs--much better IMHO-YMMV.

Well, this thread has been dormant for about 2 years, but for those who may still be interested, a Heritage H-150CM Classic sounds absolutely killer through a Marshall DSL 100. I got both roughly at the same time, and it's like re-discovering music all over. Heritage H-150 + tubey Marshall = bliss.

I have a VoxAC50CP2, for those familiar with this model and how it differs from the classic AC50's, and they are very Marshall-y. I run my 140 (thinner 150 basically) through it and it sounds awesome for hardrock/metal.

I'll be interested in hearing the differences between my stock Schallers and the HRWs this weekend. Think my tin ears will be able to pick out the differences?

My 2 cents..I would take your amp to the store, and play as many H-150's as I could, til I found the one that really floated my boat..That's the best way in my opinion, plus it's a lot of fun..

Hi Squaken ...I have a JCM 800 and a JCM 900 and love to play my 150 through both . I love the Duncan 59's but I really am only looking at playability and build quality when I buy because pickups are so easily replacable with dozens of great choices . Yes it will cost you some bucks to change them out but it's so easy to do ...don't let a pickup scare you away from a guitar .I'm a big Duncan fan and there are many great choices there .Go for the Heritage ...support the little guys ...corporate America has enough of our money !

I have used my Heritage's with Marshall's, primarily vintage for many years:

Also I currently have a Marshall 1959HW modified by George Metropoulos, but sold my HW cabs, so I am currently using my Heritage's through my killer Crate Vintage Club 30 watt 1X12", loaded with a Celestion Anniversary G12H-30 speaker!
