Guido Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Happy New Year! I have the chance to buy a very nice H150P goldtop with P90's. Actually I thought the 'P' is an indication for the P90's but just found out that it stands for poplar body. The seller wants 1600 USD for it. I think it's too high for a poplar body. What do you guys think? And why did Heritage built them? What's the tonal difference to mahogony? Guido
SouthpawGuy Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 There are some brand new 150s' going for around that price. I think they were built as a lower cost version of the 150, can't say I've seen a 150P with P-90s though as that option has only been available in the last seven or eight years. Do you have any photos or the serial number to indicate when it was built ? edit: are you sure it's a poplar body ? Some sellers have listed a 150 as 150P because of the P-90s, not the construction. Have them check the control cavity label for the model name.
brentrocks Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 that price sounds a little high to me...do you have some pics to share?
CJTopes Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 If that is indeed a 150P (poplar) then the price is too high. When I was shopping 150s I remember seeing the "P" models going for much cheaper than $1200. Tonally there will probably be a difference. I'd imagine that a poplar body will be a bit brighter sounding that a mahogany body guitar.
Blunote Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I have a 150P. It sounds resonant, and warm to me -especially when compared to my maple capped HRW equipped Millie Ultra Std. However, I've seen tone wood descriptions that sometimes describe poplar as "bright". Even so, $1600 is way too much for an H-150P.
Guido Posted January 2, 2011 Author Posted January 2, 2011 Thanks to all for your answers. I will NOT buy it, due to the high pricing and the poplar body. I'd rather like the classic combination of mahogony and maple.
Blunote Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 This may be what you were looking for. A few weeks ago it was mistakenly listed as an H-150P. I think whoever listed it made the same assumption you originally did about the P designation. I'm pretty sure it's not given the trapezoid fret markers, but you could have them check the label under the back cover. This one seems to be in excellent condition and is a bit less coin than you were considering. I can also vouch for Elderly Music. I've purchased several guitars from them and they're terrific people to deal with. H150 GT w/P90s
Steiner Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Looks like I'll be at Elderly tomorrow if anybody wants me to check out anything.
