kbp810 Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 That photo must have been from before the first route... I don't see wood chips all over the place! I know what you mean about how the router kicked and jumped on that Oak. The first time I tried to route finger joints... I practiced on Pine over and over again, got it dialed in perfectly and the bit went through fast and like butter... then came the real thing, Hard Maple! It chomped, spitted, sputtered, kicked, even knocked the template off a time or two... I learned really fast the importance of a nice steady even pace going through a hard wood.
H Posted April 17, 2011 Author Posted April 17, 2011 Bit more today - cut out the control panel recess. Not perfect but not bad for a noob
Steiner Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I love that wood! It's a tad nerve wracking to look at the price of the wood, all the work, thus far, and make additional cuts. Isn't it? You're doing very well. Great looking finger-joints. Can you still count to 10 on your fingers?
kbp810 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Looks like a nice clean cut I bet it will look even better with a chrome chassis sitting under it

You're doing very well. Great looking finger-joints. Can you still count to 10 on your fingers? I can't wait to see the wood with the Osmo Oil finish applied I've got two more cuts to make: the rebates for the top and bottom pieces that secure the grill panel. Every cut I've made has made me nervous! The main reason is that all of this wood came from the same plank - I can easily get more quartersawn oak if I make a bad mistake but it wouldn't match this for shade or grain. No damage to myself so far, not even close, and that's just how I like it! Thanks for the encouragement
H Posted April 18, 2011 Author Posted April 18, 2011 Howard, you must be a natural. Hey Don, I wish I was, I'd be knocking these out five a week for a living!! It has given me an idea of how I might use some of my time when I retire - twenty years away but you have to plan a little!
Steiner Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Stay focused on the task at hand and you'll do wonderfully. There's only 1 other person I know that can handle the wood and electronics. You guys are certainly a rare breed. The best part about a project like yours is when you oil the wood and see you new baby all dressed up! Time and the sun's radiation do a lot for warming a wood project. Have you cut the speaker baffle board? What wood are you using for the baffle(pine?, Oak???)? What grille cloth are you using? As always, keep the porn coming

As always, keep the porn coming The baffle board and the bits at the rear are Baltic birch ply. I haven't cut them yet but I have LOTS of birch ply so no fears there! I may cover the rear bits in some kind of decorative cloth, not sure about that yet. I was thinking of this for the grill cloth. It's a Marshall salt and pepper design: and I was going to put on a Mesa-style cream leather handle like this: What do you think?
Steiner Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I Love it! The grille cloth should set off the handle and oak very well. You've obviously spent some time planning, That's the way to insure a stunning outcome Nice work!
JeffB Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Those combinations should look great! +1. Thats going to look nice. Good work.
H Posted April 19, 2011 Author Posted April 19, 2011 Got the grill cloth and the handle on order from Tube Amp Doctor in Germany. Oh, and I ordered this as well
H Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Made In UK Heritage G12H30 'Greenback' arriving mid-week
mooonpi Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 H, I like! Your cab pics look awesome. I can't help sharing some pics of a deluxe build I did a couple years back. Your joinery looks better than mine....great job.
H Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 That's a nice looking build, Mooonpi Is it pine? Very Voxy grill cloth! What does it sound like?

mooonpi Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Yeah it's pine. My joints are helped cosmetically by the sawdust and glue 'trick'...as I was sanding it up I saved the dust/mixed with glue and filled in any voids. I'm happy with it, but just noticed how well H's are done. It sounds great. One of the things that threw me initially is how early these amps break up...that's 'normal'. It has 2x10's...patriot copperheads. The grill cloth is just fabric from a second hand store. I bought a few things I thought would look interesting. That was the winner...although I demo'd a leapoard print!
H Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 One of the harder decisions to make has been the choice of speaker. Thanks to those who contributed to the thread on that, it helped It arrived a couple of days ago: Celestion Heritage G12H30
H Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 The grill cloth and the handle were tough decisions too but this Marshall/Mesa pairing should look good And I now have the option of red or violet jewel lights

kbp810 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 The grill cloth and the handle were tough decisions too but this Marshall/Mesa pairing should look good And I now have the option of red or violet jewel lights I'd vote for violet, red to me just seems so standard, typical, boring... and this will be no standard, typical, or boring amp! I almost always use green on mine (with the exception of orange on DB's amp to match the orange tolex)
Hfan Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Good choice Check that speaker. It looks like it has been chopped in half. May cause early breakup.
