gjdbav89 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 My new Heritage 150 came set up with the Seth Lover pickups very close to the strings and the pole pieces on the bridge pickup set up recessed. Is this standard? Has anyone experimented with different positions? I'm not playing metal so getting the highest output isn't my concern. Thanks!

Take measurements with an accurate ruler so you can return them to the stock position if desired. Alternately, just keep track of how many turns you make on the adjustment screws. Adjust them and see what you like. I personally like to set the screws so they follow the curve of bridge. but it's not necessary. I leave the outside screws about flush with the cover and then raise the inner screws accordingly. As for pickup height, it's personal. Some people love the humbuckers up close to the strings because you can get away with it. Personally I like to back them off a little as I just don't like that hot of a signal hitting the amp. I also like the bass side of the pickup slightly farther away from the strings than the treble side as this helps keep the tone from becoming to woofy/boomy/bassy, but that's a personal thing.
Joey Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I have a "set up and basic repair manual", I bought, which references standard Fender and Gibson pick up and string height etc. I use the Gibson settings as a starting point on my Heritage and just tweek to what pleases my ears and tone desire
FredZepp Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 It seems like I always have to lower the pickups when I get one. I set the bridge where it sounds better, which for me is lower. Then I lower the neck pickup to where the middle toggle position sounds good. Sometimes I raise the treble polepieces in the neck pickup to help with the balance.
gjdbav89 Posted January 15, 2011 Author Posted January 15, 2011 Thanks for all the helpful responses. I definitely like the sound i'm getting after lowering the pickups!
bolero Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I just set the screws the same height as the cover & then adjust the pickup heights to taste...usually the bridge is a bit closer to the strings, as it's brighter/to get the same perceived volume as the neck pup...which I lower a bit because they get boomy too close to the strings, and cream up too much thru a cranked amp. I find neck pups sound clearer when they're a bit lower
