TalismanRich Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Has anyone here ever seen or played an H150 or 157 with a 25.5 inch scale? It seems to me that a lot of the sound of a Fender is due to the 25.5 vs. 24.75 inch scale of the LP style. Lots of people go with humbuckers on strats and teles, but they don't sound the same as an LP or 150. So, it got me thinking, what if you had a 150 with P Rails and a 25.5" scale. Would it be able to do the tele sound more correctly when in single coil mode? How about something like the noiseless single coils? Might be an interesting custom build. I know Heritage does the 25.5 inch scales on the KB and Eagle archtops. Ebony board to keep it bright like a maple tele?
big bob Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 this one is 25.5 scale and does the tele sound fine, as well as the hum sound.
Steiner Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Oh! I've played that one! It is one down right superb ax!
SouthpawGuy Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Wasn't there a 25.5" scale 535 at NAMM 2010 ?
koula901 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 TalismanRich, I believe the difference in sound, between a 150 and Fender guitars is due mainly to the wood, rather than the length of the scale. Strats are made of Alder (generally speaking, and Teles are generally made of ash. These woods emphasize different parts of the harmonic range then a mahogany slab. I think that with a shorter-scale neck, you get easier bends. The shape of the guitar also has a little something to do with the sound . . i.e., the tele having more mass/weight is generally punchier sounding than a strat.

I guess that's the reason I'm curious about what a maple/mahogany body would sound like if it was outfitted with a 25.5inch scale. I know Big Bob has a triple single coil 150. I think it's still on a standard scale. This is the other side of the equation. The scale length definitely has an effect on the sound, with a totally different tension. I think they tend to be more "boinky" (is that a word?) judging by a double HB strat sound vs a double HB 150 and the sound unamplified.
koula901 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Well, it's an interesting question. Maybe one of the guitar luthiers out there can answer this question.

I think Kenny said it best when he said the sound was "like a confused bastard step child of orvil and leo, and thats a good thing"
