Hi guys,

As you well know I'm still looking for a h535 (possibly a late eighties or early nineties) and a Eagle classic( my two white whales) .Well is the only Eagle Classic still on sale all around my country.

It's a 2007 (X27102),I find it very beautiful, but the guitar has a crack under the switch( agh I didn't notice it at first visual check of the pic). The seller told me that the guitar is ok, that the top has not been compromised ,but I think it took a big hit (strong blow maybe is more correct?!?!)

The price required is 1750 Euro (1USD=0,74€),probably too high. How much can it lose value with this crack? The guitar is about 300 miles away from where I live.I don't really know what to do...

Could a good liuther resolve this problem? :sorry_mini:

Any Advice?

Thanks

bebove .. mi amico; The damage looks like it will be very difficult to repair, because it is not near the F hole on the lower bout. It can be repaired. It is not impossible . . but it will be difficult. Usually, difficult translates to . . expensive. Here is my suggestion to you; even though 300 miles is a long way to travel, if that is the only 575 available to you in Italy . . you should make the trip and inspect the guitar yourself and in person, not through photographs. It's quite possible that the damage doesn't even need to be repaired. If it is stable . . then it's OK. If you are concerned about the appearance of the damage, you will still see the damage even after the repair. If the crack goes all the way through the top, then the repair will require a "cleat" to be glued to the underside of the top . . so, the damage will still be visible. The repair person will have to somehow reach in through the F hole on the lower bout and get a small piece of wood (cleat) glued on to the underside of the top. It's gonna be difficult repair. If the repair requires the top or the back to be removed, then I would not buy the guitar. But, I do not think the top or the back will have to be removed.

The damage probably devalues the guitar 30% to 40%. You should offer no more than 1100 euros. If it was me, I would not be afraid to buy that guitar at the right price.

Thanks Patrick!you're always so exhaustive!!

Well,I've just talked also to a young luthier friend of mine, Mauro Freschi, http://www.myspace.com/demauroguitars/photos

He can only confirm what you wrote...and he should inspect the damage himself not through photographs.

Well certainly I'd pay 1100 euro(1490USD) for this guitar,1750euro(2380 USD) is really too much for this resale( although in Europe all imported guitars are much more expensive).First of all I'll make this offer and we'll see...otherwise I'll wait for another offer on the italian market(hi hi....the neverending story) :drink_mini:

Thanks again Patrick amico mio

If the seller really wants to sell the guitar, he realizes that he has a problem due to the damage. I really do not see this damage as anything that will affect the sound and the playability of the guitar. But, it does affect the resale value. Make him a low offer and buy it if he accepts the offer. It is really a beautiful guitar! Either way . . . buona fortuna with your decision.

that looks like it has been repaired?

Hey Brent,you're right!

Mauro Freschi, a luthier friend of mine, told me the same thing. The seller has certainly tried to repair it but was not done a good job..... :unsure_mini:.....uhm

Well, it depends on the extent tf the damage. That is a very sensitive area. It might have been really messed up?

That repair certainly reduces the value and will for the life of the guitar..

But with that said, if it is stable, it could be cleaned up cosmetically to be less noticeable.

Or... it could be a weak spot now and have to be treated with extra care always. And that may be tougher to determine.

It's nice though and would be great for the right price.
