Hey guys,

I'm new here and planning on buying a Heritage Eagle. The one I am interested in is definitely pre-1990, and in good/great condition, just needs a set up. I was wondering what a fair price would be for this. I'll post the asking price after I have a few replies so as not to bias your answers. Thanks for your help!

cleergell . . . If I may quote Marisa Tomei's character in "My Cousin Vinny" . . . . "It's a Bull Shit Question". There are just too many variables for any of us to quote you what we believe is a fair price for an Eagle. Good/Great condition is soooooooooo subjective. Any up grades? Mounted pup or floating pup?

Here's the only correct answer you are ever going to get to so vague a question . . . . It's a fair price if you really want it and you can't buy it for a dime less. Any other answer is just plain wrong!!!

Are there any details I can provide to help you further formulate an idea? Its bone stock with the floating p90. The only reason i say good/great is because of an inch long check in the finish by the cutaway. Other than that it is perfect.

The short answer is . . . NO. There are no other details you can provide us. If the seller is asking $10,000 . . . . .and you feel you MUST own this guitar.. . .and you can't buy it for less that $10,000 ... .then, that's what it's worth, to you. This is a decision that only you can make. Eagles can be worth any where from $2,000 to $3,200 in today's market. But, I wouldn't pay that much for one that I didn't want. I'd also pay more than that for one that I really, badly wanted to have . . . . and couldn't buy for less. It's got to be YOUR CALL!!!

How about a photo? If not its worth what ever you want to pay for it. Patrick is absolutely correct "It's a fair price if you really want it and you can't buy it for a dime less." My advice? Buy it you'll like it.

Try doing some searches on the for sale and bay watch sections here. maybe you can get some comps. Or check out completed deals on e bay.

I've never heard of a floating P90 pickup. All I've ever seen are mounted into the top.

We definitely need more information about this Eagle if we are to help in any way.

The question was for pricing on an Eagle. The one you reference on Craig's List is a Golden Eagle. Big difference! However, the posted asking price for this guitar is about $1,300 too high.

^^^^okay. I should probably stay off this thread as I don't know the Eagle models well enough. :icon_joker:

I know HOC'ers know there stuff.

Hi guys - I've just registered and I'm a long term Heritage owner (plus many other vintage Gretsch, Gibbos and Fenders) ..

I'm a regular forumite elsewhre and long time lurker. I felt I had to say that I've just read this thread with some consternation in the way that certain folk above have answered a perfectly reasonable question.

Belittling, Aloof and just plain obnoxious are the words that spring to mind when I read some of the above responses. Where do thos concerned get off in thinking that this is normal ...or do they own the forum and think that this is OK?

Is this normal clever rhetoric or an exception to the rule? If it's normal then I'm off and won't be back.......possibly like many other potentially valuable contributors I would think.

Please let me know.

Hey Arnie, I don't think anybody was intentionally aloof or belittling. I'm kind of guessing the replies are what they are because pricing is subjective and sometimes personal. Still, I think the replies were meant to be sincere; just one example, but Patrick replied in another thread that he paid over market value on a used 535 that he was very keen on. If asked without pictures or info, the price paid would most likely be labeled too much or not a good deal. The real answer is more-or-less that it sorta depends.

That said, I do personally think it's a legit question. Or at least, it's worthwhile just stating what the general price range of guitar model/style X goes for.

It's probably a non-factor now, but from what I've gathered Heritage Eagles (mahogany all over) tend to sell or be listed for just north of $1K to nearly $2K. Spruce tops a few hundred more. Golden Eagles I believe tend to sell for ~$2.5K to $3K, but one is listed as having sold in eBay for $1,500. Eagle Classics tend to float somewhere in the middle but some look killer and might go for more depending. As far as what's fair, it would largely depend on the condition, features, woods used, going market, anything that made it stand out, etc. And again, that's just kind of what I've surmised checking eBay, Craigslist, and old for-sale items here. But maybe they're normally valued for much more or much less than I'm seeing. I see some guitars sold for more than I would think was fair but that's the market or individual guitar. I've also seen (and bought) ones for what seemed like steals. Heritage Eagles tend to sell for less I believe because they aren't as flashy as the Classics or Goldens, but some people swear by Mahogany or Mahogany-and-Spruce guitars, and the retail is certainly not for peanuts.

Not trying to be obscure, but I think that's part of why people didn't just say "a fair price for a Heritage Eagle is $1,200 to $1,500" (or whatever, those were just kind of random numbers). Anyway, I hope you stick around!

Hi Arnie: I can see where you might interpret my 1st response to the OP's question as less than gentle. Believe me, it wasn't meant to be offensive. I like to quote memorable lines out of movies. . where I feel that they're applicable. I just loved that Marisa Tomei line from "My Cousin Vinny" . . . and I felt it was really pertinent and applicable. It was a kind of tongue in cheek way of assertively telling the OP that he's asking a question that is really impossible for any of the members to answer accurately, without seeing and knowing the guitar he wants to buy. Regarding your question; "is this normal clever rhetoric or an exception to the rule" . . . with me, it's pretty normal. I'm pretty sure that I won't be changing that any time soon. We'd love to have you stick around. I just ask that you don't jump to any negative conclusions. We like to have fun and sometimes I crack wise in a fun loving way, as others here do also. The Administrator and the Moderators have made it clear to us that they will not tolerate personal or ad hominem attacks or insults. We all seem to pretty clearly understand, agree with and comply with those rules. But, we do occasionally enjoy some good natured fun poking at our friends. It's all good . . .. stick around, you'll enjoy it.

Hi Arnie, Welcome.

My opinion on this is all the advise delivered was sincere with no malice intended, some maybe right to the point but all well intended none the less.

Hope you stick around.
