tulk1 Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Well, it's here. I finally got my Heritage Mandolin. It's an H-40 A style. It was rather grimy when it got here. I pulled the strings and bridge to be able to do a deep clean. Even had to take apart the tuners to clear some grime from the cogs, clean the patina and re-lube the bushings/gears. Spent about 2 hours cleaning and what not. Then restrung that puppy, intonated and O .. M .. G .. !! It's a friggin canon. At first I thought it wasn't all that loud, until I compared it to the Kentucky. It's bolder, has more presence and clarity. And just feels better in the mitts. Came with a mando-capo, so that's pretty cool. The neck is on the fat side, with a soft V. Adjustable truss rod, altho' I can't see this neck ever moving. It's a monster for a Mandolin. The neck joint (see the pics) is huge! And Solid. The top is a thicker carve than the Kentucky and overall just a tad bit thicker thru the body. Hard to take a good pic of the back, so words will have to do - it's a TransBlack back, along with a TransBlack neck finish. Just too friggin' cool. MoP headstock inlay. A masterpiece, for sure. For those that aren't that familiar, Aaron Cowles builds Jubal Guitars (ask Patrick about his) and Mandolins. Highly praised within the folk music genre` for his uber cool mandos. And word is he built these. Anyway, enough rhetoric ... here's some pics. The back and neck are extremely hard to photog. Here's the best I could come up with ..... and it sucks. Just figure a Transblack maple finish and you're there. Same goes for the neck. Not this splotchy. Much much mucho better than this photog.
big bob Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Ah, you have landed one of your white whales, Congrats...
fxdx99 Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Fantastic, Kenny - congratulations! What a nice nice looking instrument.

What a pretty looking instrument. I know how long you've been looking for one of these. I'm happy for you that you found one and that you're so pleased with the one you found. What makes this so great for you, is that the music you do at gigs and this mando will work well together. Congratulations and play it in great spirit and health.
skydog52 Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Nice purchase Kenny. I know you've been looking for one for awhile. I'm glad the sound is as good as the looks. Beauty!
FredZepp Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Wow, that does have a monster heal on that neck. I love the arm rest, my Martin A Style doesn't have that. It looks great. With that top it looks like it'll have a nice bark. These little things put out a lot of sound, and considering where this one is from, I'm sure it compares with the best.
SouthpawGuy Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Excellent ! Glad you finally got your Heritage mando, play it in good health !
High Flying Bird Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Congrats Kenny. This looks like the model Mr. Walker had back in the late 80s.
Kuz Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 WOW, FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!! I know how long you have lusted for one. I think I had to rip one out of your hands when you were considering a quick dash out the door at the Heritage plant (LOL)!!!! I didn't know how good the quality would be on these guys, if they were just "Heritage" in name only.... now I can see she is Heritage through and through!!!!!!!!

skydog52 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Nice one Mark, do you play Mandolin? Kenny plays everything and with everything!
GuitArtMan Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 I don't mean to alarm you, but there are soap suds all over the ground in some of those pictures... California dreaming, on such a winters day...
yoslate Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Fabulous, my friend! Worth every minute of the Quest, I would guess. You'll be scheduling time at the bridge, come August, no doubt! She's a beaut, Kenny; I know you'll do her proud.
tulk1 Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Wow, that does have a monster heal on that neck. I love the arm rest, my Martin A Style doesn't have that. That's my arm rest. Custom cut for me. Not sure it helps, but yeah, it looks cool! Nice one Mark, do you play Mandolin? Uh ... who? I don't mean to alarm you, but there are soap suds all over the ground in some of those pictures... Hey, it's laundry day. I'm never sure how much soap to put in. .............. Actually, it was defrost day. First day above freezing in two weeks. Thats after two weeks of sub-zero morning. First time I've seen that sidewalk in weeks! You'll be scheduling time at the bridge, come August, no doubt! She's a beaut, Kenny; I know you'll do her proud.Uh ........ well, about that. Guess you haven't heard. The band is playing that weekend. And this one I can't get changed, like last year. It's a County Fair, rather than a bar gig. So, most likely no Acoustic Bridge, no Barn for me this year. Going to order this for the mandolin next week. Non-invasive amplification for stage. Even has a volume control!!
FredZepp Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 The spruce on the top looks sweet... you know how sometimes you just look at the wood in an instrument and can almost hear it.
MartyGrass Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Looks good. Took you long enough to reel this one in but worth the pursuit. That looks like something Aaron Cowles would build.

That'll be every bit as wrong as Randy's absence the year before! You'll be missed like a front tooth!
Steiner Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Congrats on the long-awaited score. What pickup system are you going to install?
Hfan Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Very nice, a work of art. I imagine they are hard to come by. What year is it?
tulk1 Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Congrats on the long-awaited score. What pickup system are you going to install? Greg, I'm going with a Schatten pickup system. Non-invasive. The call-out box is approximately 1/4" high, about 1 1/2" long and has a vol control. The piezo tapes to the bridge, and the box attaches to the bottom of the tailpiece. Reviews are stellar on this system. Very nice, a work of art. I imagine they are hard to come by. What year is it? They are extremely hard to come by. They made over 100, but less than 250, or so I was told. It's a "G" series, which makes it a '90 ... right? B='85, so G='90. Think thats right.

Now don't be girlie man, get the damn drill out you jack wagon. why would you put some big a55 ole tone sucking monstrosity on that nice spruce top, when you could put a small hole behind the hardware on the tailpiece ? I bet you will enjoy her any way you go. Best Lance

Funny you should bring up it up, tho'. Turns out Taylor guitars pre-drills all their guitars end pins for jacks. Just in case. How thoughtful of them. As I'll be installing a Schatten internal pickup in that guitar. But the Heritage, well, maybe if I could talk the factory into installing something. But I'm not doing it. Hey! Maybe Aaron C. would do it for me.
brentrocks Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 A 1990...right at the height if their production....you had the Mandis, Gary Moores, Flattops, Archtops, H 150/157s, STATS, H 160/162s, H 170s, H 127/tele, Basses, ETC....what a great time in Heritage HISTORY!!!!
