Joey Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Anyone use 11 gauge with a wound G string on their H555 or 535? If so do you find any material difference in tone verses an unwound G string? Please share your experience.
Steiner Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 I use 11's with a wound G on all my Eagles and 575s. The odd thing is I bought a 137 from Smurf that had a wound G and have kept that in place; it just sounds right. I'm thinking about trying the wound G on the 150 for giggles. It's all about what you like. Try it.
jjkrause84 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 I used to used unwound-G 11s on my Gretsch but I could never get up to bending properly. It was a shame, really, as I enjoy how 11s feel under my fingers while chording.

The bottom is fairly heavy- 30, 40, 50. The top can be bent as much as you want. These are David Gilmour strings. They are steel, which some don't like. You could add a wound 20 to it if you'd like. http://www.juststrings.com/ghs-gb-dgg.html
tsp17 Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 For jazz, i much prefer a wound 3rd string. less able to bend, but the tone is much richer on that string which i use a lot.
golferwave Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I had my friend at the guitar shop order me a dozen wound .017" D'Addario strings. I think those are the smallest wound strings made and I've experimented with them for the G string on solid bodies and semi-hollow bodies. It's a matter of preference to each player depending on the style of music they play, but I can say that the wound G stays in tune much better.
TalismanRich Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I haven't changed the 535 to wound G, but I did start using D'Addario 10s w/ wound G on my DeArmond Starfire semi. I like the sound of the wound string, it has more fullness to it. Its not as good if you are doing heavy pulls on third string, but you can do vibrato just fine. I've been thinking of taking my 535 in for a setup and I could switch it over, instead of using the DR Pure Blues that I've had on it lately. Haven't decided which way to go yet.
212Mavguy Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I have a 555 set up with 11's and I'm gonna try a set of Thomastik Infelds with a wound g. Probably will spoil me but good...
zguitar71 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I used a wound string on my es347 for jazz stuff but for blues (which I do more gigs with ) I use and unwound. I find 11's are the best guage for blues and 12 are the best for jazz. The biggest problem with switiching to wound fron unwound or visa versa is the change in intonation, the saddle piece on the bridge will need to be moved (probably forward) to deal with the change in string type. I have 2 different guitars for blues/rock/fusion ect... and jazz so I do not have to deal with the tuning issues.
mark555 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I have a 555 and have used 11's for quite a while on it before graduating to 12's. I much prefer the wound G as it stays in tune much better, gives a far better tone and to be honest, with 11's I was very happy. Just dropped back to 10's on it because of the music I am playing right now ( I'm not even getting through the door with Jazz, as much as I would like to), but my next set will be back up to 11's with a wound 3rd.
smurph1 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I use Di Addario 10's with a wound G..I bought them by accident but found that my guitar intonated better, so I stuck with 'em..I've been thinking seriously about moving up to 11's but it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks..
Horace Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I have flat 11s on my 555. I make sure the G is a wound before I buy a set of strings. I've never used on unwound G on this guitar but have used them on other guitars. To me they sound thin, too loud, and don't seem to hold tune as well.
