schundog Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 A couple of days ago, Brent put up his 88 H-170 for sale, and I was lucky enough to snatch it up. He called me yesterday afternoon to tell me he was just dropping it off at FedEx, and it was here at my house when I got home from work tonight! I have been jonesing for a 150 as my next Heritage, and I've never been crazy about double cut solid bodies (but I love Strats and 335/535s, go figure), but this thing is gorgeous! As Brent mentioned in his for sale ad, it has a repaired headstock crack, but it seems quite solid, and certainly didn't affect tuning/playability. Some belt buckle worming in the back, a few dings around the edges, but come on, she's 23 years old! After I snapped a couple of pics outside in the remaining light, I plugged it in and fired it up. Excellent, as advertised. I asked Brent what he thought about a pickup swap. He gave me some of the usual suspect good pickups, but said the Schallers sounded great in this one, and he was right. No changes in store, for now anyway. As I timidly, I mean DEFIANTLY told the Mrs. I was buying this guitar, she hesitantly said fine, "but this is IT for awhile, RIGHT?!" Yes dear, for awhile.....
Gitfiddler Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Oh my! That is a sweetie. And check out the larger headstock...bound too! I never noticed that when she was lying prone on Brent's lawn. Sweet score!
Steiner Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Schun - you Dog! Nice guitar! It looks like she will fit in as another fine accoutrement with your growing collection. I look forward to her inaugural photo with the azure water glistening in the background Ya gotta love 'em! Congrats!!!
chico Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 looks like the binding has aged nicely. congrats on the pickup.

koula901 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Schundog Congrats on your new beauty! Almond suburst has got to be one of my all time favorites. Any chance of uploading a sound clip, someday?
FredZepp Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Great job on the first pics.. it looks great. I love bargains on Heritage guitars, and you did well with that one. It even has the nice "old style" truss rod cover... cool. Very nice features and a real looker , Congrats !!
H Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Any chance of uploading a sound clip, someday? Koula, is that because you are interested in getting a 170 or just that you'd like to hear that particular one? A couple of the tunes I've posted here were done with my 170 if you'd just like to hear one. Mine has HRWs.

Would love to hear your clips.
skydog52 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 That is one flamey top. Nice one Brian. That dealer up in Paw Paw sure sells some good ones. And we are glad. Enjoy! As far as the Misses goes. Try what I've been doing lately. She'll ask, Is that a new guitar? My response is I've had that one for years. So far so good. Until she catches on. I might have to move in with you!

Listen to the solo bits of Crystal and LowRiseStrings here http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=1120229 Both of them are the H-170 on the neck pickup.

I might have to move in with you! The couch in the ManCave is ready when you are, Paul! LOL. LedZep, you mentioned the TrussRod Cover; It looks like a Gibson style, where the bottom isn't flush with the nut (carefully re-reading this.) Were they all like this in the early days, and when did they go to the current design? Inquiring minds want to know....
big bob Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 That is one sweet top young man... welcome to the dark side... edit: is that an ebony neck,.... nice

My 1989 H-140 has that TRC, but .. I can't say what year they stopped. It is rounded as opposed to the squared off current shape, but not a "Bell" like the Gibsons have either. And as I like old Heritage guitars, I love seeing that TRC design.
