FredZepp Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 For purely cosmetic reasons , I decided to change the tailpieces on my two H-150's from the large Schaller to the more conventional Gotoh. I kept the Schaller bridges , because I like the smooth edges on them better than the sharp edges that others have. It was simple to do, just use the tailpiece for a Gibson Les Paul that is US sizes, NOT the metric (M8) one. The new studs just thread right in. Although I don't really expect an audible tone difference , the new bridges do fit tighter to the body and that can't be bad. Some pics in florescent lighting w phone camera... Before.. After.. Before.. After...
FredZepp Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 I also took this opportunity to pull the pickups from the ASB 150 to see what they are. I didn't know what was in that one.. only that they'd been changed. But I really love the sound of that guitar, so it didn't matter what they are.. but I was curious to see what is in it that sounds soooo good. So... the neck is a Burstbucker 1. an underwound PAF pickup by Gibson. And the Bridge is a Seth Lover. This combination is quite nice to my ears...
koula901 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Fred, I agree, the Gotoh look much better on your beautiful 150s. that was some nice porn, there.
FredZepp Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 VSB and OSB - what a combination! The pics of the first 150 make the finish look darker than normal... actually it is a ASB.. (but it looks OSB in those pics)
MartyGrass Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 The TP change looks better. The pup combo is brilliant for warm, mellow tones. I've learned from archtop luthiers the value of underpowered and distant pickups. The belief is that this allows more of the wood quality to come out through the amplifier.
DetroitBlues Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 My H-140 has the original Schaller pup's. The bridge sounds great, but I really want to change out the neck. The Burstbucker is exactly what I'm looking for.
mtpatty Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Nice guitars! I agree the changes are very nice cosmetically! Also, even though I love my Bare Knuckle Pups, I do love the sound of the Seth's and contrary to what many say, I like the Burstbucker's too! Good deal! Two Thumbs way up! Mark
brentrocks Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 your OSB 150 is one of the nicest 150s out there, i think

FredZepp Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 The new pictures of the 150's were taken in a Mattress Store... yeah, really. Here is the other 150 with a really nice mattress. .... ( I lightened this pic a bit )
fxdx99 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 The new pictures of the 150's were taken in a Mattress Store... yeah, really. Well that's one of the oddest gig locations I've heard of. Fred, your VSB 150 is one of my favorites - that's just got a really good looking top/finish on it.

( I lightened this pic a bit ) Fred, Nice 150's. They look better with the new t pieces. What is the lighter finish? Antique SB?? Think it is my new favorite H finish I have a Trans Black 157 with the Schaller Tail but it doesn't look too bad, maybe the black pieces blend in better with the black finish. Thanks for the simple instructions, I am still considering swapping mine. I've read some of your past posts, you seem to no your stuff.. what do you think of the roller bridges tone wise? I like the adjust-ability of mine (also it is paid for already). I do wonder about tone aspects. Past threads here have mentioned improvements. How much for the Beauty Rrest Mattress set? Work a deal for a fellow member?
FredZepp Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 Well that's one of the oddest gig locations I've heard of. Fred, your VSB 150 is one of my favorites - that's just got a really good looking top/finish on it. thanks.. There has been some rockin' done at this mattress store from time to time. And thanks for the compliment, Brent. That 150 rocks.. and the finish( the ASB ) looks different under different lighting. Fred, Nice 150's. They look better with the new t pieces. Work a deal for a fellow member? the lighter finish 150 is VSB (Vintage Sunburst) and the darker more tobacco one is ASB (antique Sunburst) although it doesn't usually photograph that dark .. I believe that when a guitar doesn't sound good to you, there are certainly possibilities to improve.. in my case, I love the tone of mine already, so it is doubtful that any change like a bridge is going to really improve it to my ears. And I may not like it as well as the rollers. The Schaller bridge is high quality and personally I can't predict any improvement by changing it. I like the fact that you don't have the sharp edges on a roller bridge, it feels better to play to a degree. (and of course HOC members get deals on mattresses, but I only deliver in Cincinnati area .)
FredZepp Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 I need a new mattress I could tie one on top of my car for the PSP journey. ...
High Flying Bird Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Well that's one of the oddest gig locations I've heard of. I can see Fred play some wah for new couples trying out the beds.
FredZepp Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 I can see Fred play some wah for new couples trying out the beds. It's important to create the right vibe ...
Assumer Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I have always like the more traditional TP. Looks great.
Kuz Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 BIG improvement, Fred!!! And you do have some of the greatest, if not the greatest, looking 150s out there!!!
FredZepp Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 BIG improvement, Fred!!! And you do have some of the greatest, if not the greatest, looking 150s out there!!! You are too kind, but we know that there are several 150's in your stable that would be up for that title also. And we just keep seeing better and better ones here also. I agree it was an improvement aesthetically .
brentrocks Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I can see Fred play some wah for new couples trying out the beds. LMAO
ledzef Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I bought the Gotoh aluminium tailpiece for my LP off Stew-Mac website. Such a improvement over the stock one just waiting to get the rest of my Jimmy Page harness before I stick the Manlius pup but I have to admit the wait is killing me I want to try that humbucker bad!
