kidsmoke Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Wondering if anyone has tried putting classic double row Kluson's on a 535. I started wading through the gallery, but it could take days, and it's making me feel woefully inadequate. I'll be bringing my 1st Heritage home soon, a ASB 535. Has the standard unbound headstock. But with all the other binding.....neck, body, pickguard.....seems that the tuners could really make it pop. Actually, any headstock shots, or opinions on this conversion, are appreciated. Cheers!

kidsmoke Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 It's been done and you should get replies soon with pics. Looking forward to it. NNB, have you ever reviewed your ShepTones on this forum? That's another swap I'm considering. You have all the goods in your stable, it appears. Seth's, Shep's, I'd be interested in your thoughts on the topic, how they might sound in the 535. Here I go, pirating my own thread before it even gets off the ground.
H Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Take a look in my gallery - I've personally done this conversion with TonePros Klusons with my 150, 170 and 535. Be careful if you want to use the real Kluson tuners (i.e. not the TonePros copies) as the post length came up too short for a 535 on the set I originally bought. The TonePros kit, however, looks the part and fits perfectly. If you have Grover Rotomatics on yours currently, you'll need to drill an extra hole per tuner to secure the gearcase to the headstock. The other hole is in exactly the right spot vacated by the Grover. This is literally a half hour job and well worth it in my opinion. This is a shot of my 150 with TonePros Klusons.
DetroitBlues Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I think Grover Imperials looks a little sharper.... Just my opinion.
kidsmoke Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Excellent, H, that's what I was hoping to find, pics of an ASB with Klusons. Really does look nice. I almost wonder about the whiter round knobs, matching better with the nut. I like those Imperials, too, and I've played a guitar with them, functionally, they're awesome, with those wide knobs. I think they fit better on a dressier build though, like a 555 or a bound headstock. Functionally, H, you find the TPK's work fine? The Grovers are a quality product. What p'ups do you have in the 535?
H Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I like the way the cream Klusons match with the binding on the 535. They're good quality kit, well priced and accurate in execution. Can't ask for more than that! I've got stock Schallers in the 535. I've toyed with putting Phat Cats in as I love them in my 150. However, I have a nice spread of sounds with my Heritages (final piece of the jigsaw is my 170 with HRWs) so I don't think I'll make that change anytime soon. Glad to help and hope it spurs you on to do the job yourself. One final tip, on removing the Grovers, take out the retaining ring which sits on the headstock face by tapping it gently through the post-hole. I scratched my 535 by trying to lever one off before I saw sense!
