barrymclark Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Ok, my 575 is the basic dual humbucker with two vols, two tones and a 3 way toggle. I thought when in the middle position, only one volume would work as an overall volume... not both. Am I wrong here? Also, when in the middle position, if I have one volume knob maxed and roll in the other one... I get nothing for a short bit then it has small popping noise and the sound comes in FAST almost like a switch... then the volume knob acts normal until you get to the end of the knobs turn. Right before max, the sounds seems to soften and muffle. Almost like they are out of phase. This happens on both knobs. There is some crackling and popping when working the toggle. I have had it for all of about 6 months... and it probably hung in the shop for a year previous to me getting it. It has never left my house save for moving from one house to the next and that was hand carried in my car and not lumped in with everything else in the move. It got special care as did all my guitars. It stays in its case when not played. Never left out. Any thoughts?
FredZepp Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 One of the cool things about the middle position is that you can play with blending the pickups.... and find that awesome tone on that guitar by fine tuning this. It's good that both volumes work in this position.

Joey Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 When in the middle position you control both pups (volume & tone) individually. The popping issue sounds like possibly a bad cap or possibly a bad pot in the guitar. This should be any easy fix for your Tech.

Also this time of year with my gas heat (I don't have a humidifier shame on me) low humidity in the house has lead to some weird static electricity discharges which can be heard when amplified.
Joey Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Get a can of electronic contact cleaner at Radio Shack. Pull off the volume and tone knobs and spray the cleaner over the shaft of the pot. Also hit the pick up switch..it will penetrate. Make sure you protect the guitar finish. Then turn the knob back and forth and see if this helps. If not, you need to see your Tech.
FredZepp Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Yeah... but what about the other issues? The popping, the tone deadening. Those are more difficult to address without hearing them. But pops and crackles are generally a dirty pot and some contact cleaner may help. Sometimes just using them works it out. The taper of the pot (how much it changes the volume or tone when you turn it) varies and can be changed by changing the pot itself. You may notice when you are playing on one pickup, as you turn down the volume it will lose some treble. (with standard wiring) As you mix the two pickups this creates some unusual reactions as you hit the 3/4 point on the volume of one of the pickups. It is cutting treble and is mixed in pretty loud in relation to the other pickup. As you hit the 1/4 point on the volume, it is only slightly mixed in and so the pickup at max takes over mostly. But it's hard to say if there is an issue, without hearing it. If you don't like it, there are certainly things that can be done to improve it.
barrymclark Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 From talking to Graham at Wolfe, he says this is normal. I guess since I use the volume knobs more these days than ever it is just now that I have noticed the sudden change in tone right at max guitar volume. So, it is all good. The noise in the toggle I can just use compressed air with.

My 535 which I'm not sure but I think is wired the same does that too..It's cool to be able to adjust the volume and tone to taste on the fly..Gives you endless sonic options..
