DetroitBlues Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 While some of you more traditional folks out there might just be happy plugging you guitar straight into the amp, the rest of us rely on pedals to get that holy grail of tone we are looking for. So let's lay it all out there (we're talking pedals gents, don't let your minds wander!). So what is your "rig" setup? Pedals chain order/settings with what guitar and amp combination? What's the tone you looking for by doing this? I'm always looking for new ideas, so I'd like to hear what the rest of you have....
tulk1 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I use pedals all the time. Board goes: Line6 Wireless - Ernie Ball Jr Vol - PitchBlack tuner - Wampler Compressor - CMATMODS Buttah OD - Suhr Shiba OD - Fullton OCD - Maxon Phase90 - Danelectro FAB D8 Delay (yeppers and it's cool!). I can cover quite a few basses with this rig. The Wampler Compressor does a great job of volume limiting. The Buttah helps to drive the front of the amp when I need natural clipping. The Shiba is great for smoothing out Single Coils when distorted, and making HBs sound larger at low volumes. The OCD is good for those harder toons that would sound good thru a larger/louder amp. The Phase 90 is good for getting some swirly sounds going. And the FAB D8 - it was $15, shipped. And believe it or not, it's a great delay pedal. Lots of control over the delay, decay times, repeats and makes a great reverb, as well. I power the board with a DC Brick.
GuitArtMan Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Currently: Teese Picture Wah -> Red Witch Moon Phaser -> Lovepedal Amp Eleven -> Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive -> Lovepedal Eternity -> Barber Small Fry -> Fulltone ChoralFlange -> Strymon El Capistan. The Amp Eleven replaced my BJF Mighty Blue which I swore I'd never sell, but $880 later... I've been playing around with the AnalogMan Bi-Chorus. I like it because I can have my traditional slow chorus, and then a fast chorus as well (for rotary speaker sim). The ChoralFlange has been there since day one 'cause it's just an awesome pedal. The Strymon El Capistan replaced my T-Rex Replica which I've had for years (still have it, just off the board for now). I'll occasionally swap OD pedals in/out if I'm looking for a new/different sound. I'm also looking for something to stack into the Sparkle Drive as my old BJF Mighty Blue into the Sparkle Drive yielded as massively fat, yet articulate distortion that I want to replicate.
Tim Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Lets see...Guitar in to 1.)EH Big Muff Pie to 2.) SD Pickup Booster to 3.) BK Butler Tube Driver to 4.)Hermida Zendrive to 5.) Dunlop Wah Pedal to 6.) EH Stereo Memory Man to 12.)Digitech Synth Wah to 13.)Boss Noise Suppressor OUT to BBE Sonic Maximizer to Lexicon MPX100 Multi effects(reverb/chorus/clean) to Delta Labs Effectron II(delay/clean)...out to Behringer Preamp to amp (Fender Blues Jr or Roland JC 77)...crazy, eh?
zguitar71 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Keeley Compressor>Fulltone Clyde Wah> Fulltone Deja Vibe> Pro tone Lithium Chorus> Electroharmonix Micro POG> Home Brew Electronics Mimic Moch 2 Delay: It is all routed through a Lehle Dual A B T with the Boss tuner on a seperate loop and the AB runs the two amp channels that are completely separated and run off of separate jacks on my early model Carr Slant 6V 2x12. The newer Carr's have one jack and a foot pedal for the two channels but the old ones like mine require an AB box, kind of a pain in the butt; however, the amp sounds too good to ever really have a complaint about its operation. The Lehle keeps the pedals on a loop and has built in adjustable buffers so there is no signal loss and the tone stays true. I have plugged directly into the amp and cannot tell a difference when the pedals are added through the Lehle but there is a difference without the Lehle.
mark555 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 No pictures I'm afraid, but much of the time I play just hooked into the amp, but now and then I use an Alesis Quadreverb and a Boxx OD3. I actually like some of the pedals out there, I just haven't had the cash to spend on them lately.

DetroitBlues Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 Its pretty amazing all the different ways everyone uses to get their "own" tone!
pegleg32 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I'm using Jacques pedals. Since this pic was taken I have added a Line 6 wireless on the front. Also, I have moved my compressor to the left side so it is the last pedal and I don't go through the Boss tuner as it has a separate input from the Line 6 unit.
Assumer Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 It changes often but right now happy with my nova system into my boogie electra dyne. I keep changing from the loop to the font of the amp with the NS. Right now going in the front.
kbp810 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Pedals? We don't need no stinking pedals! (sorry, the thread didn't specify whether or not cork sniffing tube snobs were allowed to chime in)
DetroitBlues Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 Pedals? We don't need no stinking pedals! (sorry, the thread didn't specify whether or not cork sniffing tube snobs were allowed to chime in) Nah, its all good. I've been using Lucio's TS9 in front of a Boss Power Stack. Didn't have the same warm crunch as a normal OD channel amp would. So I'm looking for ideas.

It produces some wonderful classic rock low to medium gain rhythm tones. It's also very touch responsive, play lightly and it cleans up, dig in and it gives more grit. It works really well when stacked with other od / booster pedals.
FredZepp Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I love this pedal.. by LovePedal. I haven't used pedals much, other than a Crybaby, since the late 70's. But this one just sounds great to me..
koula901 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Fred Is that pedal for crunch, or crunch to distortion?
FredZepp Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Fred Is that pedal for crunch, or crunch to distortion? It does a wide variety.. if I set the amp fairly clean, it does a nice overdrive ( and you have 2 different settings available ) But if I run it through the amp with some distortion dialed in with the master volume.. it does some hairy distortion sounds.
smurph1 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Leseee...Radial Tonebone Classic tube distortion, Ibanez original TS-9 (Tube Screamer) MXR Dyna-Comp Squisher, into Dunlop Crybaby Wah..I need to get a volume pedal too eventually, and I need to build the board itself..I've got all the wood I need to make it, now I need to find the time..LOL
DetroitBlues Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 Started to find the sweet spot with my Boss ST-2 pedal. I watched the Proguitarshop.com video late last night and noticed his settings of the pedal through a Fender DRRI with a strat. Now I'm able to find more of the tone I'm looking for. The TS9DSX is ok, but is very muddy using a neck pup... Went to GC today because they had a used Boss DS-1 for $20, but sold before I got there. Listened to the Keeley DS1 and the Keeley DS9DSX and those were great pedals. I believe the Keeley modded DS-1 is possible to do, so I might give that a shot....
tbonesullivan Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 oh yeah... totally forgot to post about pedals. Anyway, currently I run mine like this: Guitar --> ISP Decimator --> Boss OD-20 --> Radial Tonebone Hot British --> Amp. Future acquisitions: Morley Wah, MXR Dist+, Jekyl & Hyde, Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2, and a small pedal board. I have a carvin XP4 for all the modulatory type of effects.
DetroitBlues Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 Which reminds me, anyone use the Keeley modd'd DS-1 pedal?
squawken Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Which reminds me, anyone use the Keeley modd'd DS-1 pedal? I have the keeley modded SD-1, not the DS-1, and love it. I always keep looking at other pedals to replace it, but never have. Very smooth distortion, and rather full tone.

DetroitBlues Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 I watched a lot of vid's on youtube, most of them really show just how much better a modified DS-1 sounds over a stock model. They are kind of cheap used too.
RJLII Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Xotic Scott Henderson RC Booster > Fulltone OCD V4 > Barber Direct Drive > Carr Rambler. Used individually and in combination I can get a huge variety of overdriven tones, both from a gain and a "voice" perspective. Everything from just a little tooth to completely over the top.
