Hfan Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 That WOULD be an interesting comparison; according to BillM on the Fender Discussion Page, he says the newer version is an improvement, but he doesn't seem to think it will be putting him out of business anytime soon. I wouldn't dismiss a PCB board amp too quickly; In addition to the Blues Junior (I just can't bring myself to call it a BJ, haha), the Classic 30 is PCB, as are several higher end amps. KBP810 can correct me if I am mistaken here, but my understanding is that Point-to-Point doesn't necessarily improve tone, it simply makes the amps much easier to service should there be a problem down the line. Thoughts? I've done most of Bill's mods myself. Just installed his Hyboer output x former a few weeks back. There is no comparison to the stock amp I bought on e bay. It is a little beast. I haven't got that much problem with the PCBs (you do have to be a cautious solderer) as much as the ribbon cables. After ripping mine apart multiple times, the ribbon cables got stressed and weak at the solder points I've replaced all but one with straight wire. If I had to do again, I would do as many of the mods as possible at one time thereby reducing the stress on the ribbons, they where a PIA to replace with wire. My problem was each mod I did worked out so well I wanted to do more. I recommend his site for anyone into B jrs. I also have an old Silverface twin I've worked on quite a bit, it is much easier to work on for sure. But 100w is a lot to deal with as is a not exactly portable 85lbs.

No kidding too much weight and too much wattage... I'd still like to know if the Jr. III compares to the BillM Jr. But BillM sure had a lot to say... http://billmaudio.com/wp/?page_id=709

DetroitBlues Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 How's my memory..he says they didn't change much? basically removed a couple caps, raised a couple power resistors, and swapped speakers... nothing more than that.
