kidsmoke Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Well, it's official. I finally got this home. Never imagined I'd own an American made guitar, so this is a really good day. Wouldn't you know that after several days with not much going on, I'm pretty much swamped 'til the weekend, but I thought I'd share a couple quick pics, nonetheless. I'll undoubtedly do a proper photoshoot after I get it properly cleaned up. So, thanks to Marty...I've determined this was originally sold by Ed Roman. The pickups appear to be SD Blackbacks, which Duncan officianados speculate to be a Jazz neck and Custom 5 bridge. fine p'ups, but I expect to pull them soon. The guitar has been played, but is in excellent condition, perfect working order, and sounds great. The neck on this thing is fantastic. Much deeper than the HB-35 it replaces as my semi daily player. It's got flatwounds on it, 11-51's according to my Starrett mic. That's another new one on me. I'll probably be starting a thread to discuss this at a later date. Initially, I dig 'em. Here it is.....
golferwave Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 A FINE looking instrument. Congrats on your new Heritage! What are you thinking of replacing the SD pickups with?
brentrocks Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Beautiful 535. Congrats. Let me know if you take out the black backs, I might be interested in buying them.
kidsmoke Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Beautiful 535. Congrats. Let me know if you take out the black backs, I might be interested in buying them. Will Do, Brent I'm leaning Lovers or Lollars (Imperials), but I'm still open to suggestions. I was just throwin' down a little Tull and Aerosmith with these things, and I must say...sounds pretty sweet. tonally, very similar flavor to my Idol with SD's, and I'm more interested in variety, than that anything is wrong with these.
tbonesullivan Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 seth lovers are AWESOME... but then again if they really are the Jazz and custom 5, those are also awesome pickups. What color is that exactly? Wine sunburst? chestnut burst? it should say on the label.
FredZepp Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 That's a great looker... what finish is that? I don't know about the Blackbacks, but a Jazz/Custom 5 seems like a good combination. I could see that 535 being a blast to play.. it looks great.
pegleg32 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 A classic beauty. 535's are the greatest guitars ever seems to me.

Why dont you give the pups a chance before you pull them out to change them? Ya might dig them!
schundog Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Congratulations, it's beautiful. Welcome to the 535 club, the best guitar out there, PERIOD!
kidsmoke Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 That's a great looker... what finish is that? I don't know about the Blackbacks, but a Jazz/Custom 5 seems like a good combination. I could see that 535 being a blast to play.. it looks great. It's ASB, Antique sunburst. They're great pickups, but VERY similar to another guitar I have, and the C5 is a little hot and sterile for this body style. I was really thinking going as "vintage" as possible. We'll see, though. they'll have a chance to win me over.

I asked about the finish because it looks different than my ASB, but mine photographs with many different looks. In any case , it is sharp.

My ASB 535 looks WAY lighter than this too. This one has a very pronounced contrast between the edge and the burst. Beautiful finish, nonetheless

Beautiful finish, nonetheless Agreed, not sure why it photographed that way. Standard flash at dusk in a well lit room. Not that reddish to the eye. I'll get more accurate photos at some point. She's definitely ASB, and definitely a beauty to behold. Thanks for the feedback folks, I'm off the charts on this one.
DetroitBlues Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 This is one of the few guitars I say leave the pickguard on because it matches the beautiful flamed top below...
kidsmoke Posted March 25, 2011 Author Posted March 25, 2011 I have a guitar with a Jazz/ Custom Custom that I like , I don't really know about the custom 5.. I'll have to look it up. I asked about the finish because it looks different than my ASB, but mine photographs with many different looks. In any case , it is sharp. regarding the p'ups, it is somewhat speculative what the p'ups actually are. SD sells them to Ed Roman, and agrees not to talk about the specs. The SD faithful, which includes alot of dudes who are constantly swapping p'ups, and swapping magnets within p'ups, etc, have concluded that that is PROBABLY what they are. I too have a guitar with a Custom Custom in the bridge, this sounds different, but the guitar construction is different, so who's to say. Again, they're great p'ups, just not what I think when I think semi. I may grow to love them in this. This is one of the few guitars I say leave the pickguard on because it matches the beautiful flamed top below... The pickguard drew me to this, as an over the top finishing touch. The neck consummated the relationship, however.
Hfan Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Very nice congrats. I like a guitar thats been played, I find it more relaxing , not worried about putting a tiny ding in it from time to time. And Seths and 535s go well together, for me anyway.

Want to correct that statement....it was Millenium Maestro who had the experience with the Roman guitars. I mis-remembered Also, I've added photos and facts to the thread on these p'ups
