I'm getting my pics in before Big Bob steals the show.

I don't think they sound different than a H150. The Les Paul design of a single cutaway really comes from the archtop tradition, not because the design sounds superior to the double cutaway. I doubt the single cutaway added much support to the neck either. The Achille's heel of the LP was and is the base of the headstock. So what I'm saying is that the traditional LP style occurred without consideration of a double cutaway and was more conservative in appearance than the Fenders that were sweeping the country in the early 50s.

Feel free to correct me if my history is wrong.

The double cutaway maintains a solid body tone with a little less weight at about the same size and feel. It may slightly improve upper fret access. The loss of individual tone controls for each pup doesn't bother me. That can be achieved by swapping out the pot for a push-pull.

As far as visual appeal, that's all opinion.

I can hear the difference between my 170 and my 150 and I don't think it's in the pickups. The 170 has about 3/4in less mahogany sitting behind the maple cap and sounds brighter as a result.

Howard has a different perspective. He has the 1st edition H170. Mine are bigger and have the same general dimensions as the H150.

I hate to descend into a disagreement about tone because there's more smoke than heat. I don't have the best ears so anything subtle is lost on me. Pickups, strings, woods, etc. can be influential.

All I'll say on this subject is that if you have a H150 with 59s, don't buy a H170 2nd edition with 59s expecting to extend your tonal spectrum.

Do you get your trousers specially made? ;)

I'm surprised that's a 2010. It has dots on the fretboard with an unbound neck. Does yours have a 2" body?

Mine is a 2010 with traps, bound neck and 2" depth.

Maybe yours is a first edition reissue.

one funny thing with these boards, always lots of pictures and few soundclips. Isn't the point supposed to be how it sounds ? :laughing7:

there are very few vids on the net of the 170s too
