eor Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 the thought just came to me. then i dug around and saw that this actually happened. i know there are a few out there, so tell me: -is the sound that much different? is it more like a custom lp, and their ebony boards, or something else entirely? -can the extra middyness/highs be balanced out by a darker set up pickups? what's a good match? -could i expect one to be a little lighter than the average h150? say, under (or close to) 9 lbs? -do they cost extra from the custom shop? thanks, fellas.
FredZepp Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 The Korina 150's that you may have seen are possibly the "Class of '59" models that were made for a specific dealer . ( He no longer sells them) You'd have to contact the plant or a dealer to find out availability of Korina ... I'd assume a slight up charge. If you order one made to your specs, you can specify weight range, neck size, etc. My 150/ 157's are all around 9 lbs or under with no weight relief. But they aren't Korina , just nice Honduran Mahogany.
Spectrum13 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Korina goes real well with P90s and Wolfe has Korina137s in stock. If you need the maple cap that would be a custom order or wait for a class of 59 to come up for sale.
Dasherdave Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Hmmm, a Korina H-150...you are putting ideas in my head!
eor Posted April 10, 2011 Author Posted April 10, 2011 i didn't know you could specify a weight range. that would be really helpful, as i prefer not to venture north of about 9.5 lbs or so. the heavier lps i've dealt with didn't really sound better. korina popped into my head because i heard it was lighter, prettier and similar sounding. funny you bring up the h137s. i never once thought of it that way, but if you took the cap off the h150, it becomes an h137, more or less. but i don't recommend that mod, nor the inverse of it.
pcovers Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 -do they cost extra from the custom shop? thanks, fellas. There is no custom shop. I tried to order a korina 137 and the dealer I was working with got a no go response from Kalamazoo. I think it depends on who answers the phone and what mood they are in when they take the call. Ivwle played quite a few korina/limba guitars and I think if your eyes were closed you'd not hear any particularly uniqe tones. Most sounded like tones I generally get from mahogany.

eor Posted April 15, 2011 Author Posted April 15, 2011 given the way that neither heritage nor the dealer i was in negotiations with (if you could call it that) returned any of my emails, i'm apt to agree. :/ that aside, this has been helpful. if there isn't a crazy markup, or i can source a nice piece of korina myself, maybe i'll roll the dice. if not, i won't. no big deal.
