koula901 Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 The moment has arrived and I finally got my guitar back with the Fralins installed. I must say, I was quite apprehensive on whether I'd like the tone or not. Well, the good news is that the pups are so similar sounding to the Lollar P90s, one can hardly notice a difference; in fact, you might be hard pressed to find one. I'd say the tone is *almost* exactly the same, except, I think the Fralins may have a tad bit more bite to them. For me, that's a good thing. The Lollars seem to have a little more output, and on the higher strings maybe a little bit rounder sounding. These differences can only be detected if one is really scrutinizing. The Fralins were absolutely silent. All the pups are usable. I'd highly recommend the Fralins if you want great P90 sounds, without the noise. If you plan to drop Fralins into an H 137, (replacing Lollars), though, I'd recommend you call Lindy and tell him the model of guitar you're dropping them into. The plate and covers are not an exact fit (though, Lindy thought so originally, until I told him). Lindy's sending up some better-fitting covers.
Steiner Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Ah yes... Another success story! Isn't it a wonderful thing when a plan comes together? It sounds like you're very happy with the new sound. Did the Fralin models drop in and fit the same as the Lollar PUs?

Something about the plate - it wasn't deep enough, but my guitar techie was able to work with that and make it work. The most difficult problem he encountered was that the covers that ship with the Fralins didn't fit just right - something about the pole pieces not lining up exactly with the strings. Lindy's sending up covers that he thinks will fit better.
Genericmusic Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Very cool! It's such a joy when everything comes together.
Hfan Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Very cool, I love P90s and have a strong dislike for hum.

Now the debate begins..My Gibby has real P-90's in it..Your report makes me want to think hard about getting the Fralins..Thanks..

Did you really have a noticeable hum problem with the Lollipops?
koula901 Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 Did you really have a noticeable hum problem with the Lollipops? Not as bad as a strat, but yes indeed, I live in, and play in very noisy environments. The lollipops are high quality, very well shielded pups, but despite the shielding, noisy like any other P90 in a bad environment, but probably a bit less than those without the shielded wiring. The Fralins are perfectly silent.

I had heard that the Lindy Fralin Hum canceling pups did exactly what you are saying.
Hfan Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Glad they worked out, may try them on my P-90 Hamer one day.
DetroitBlues Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I remember Gibson made P-100's for a while, but I don't think they were aftermarket. Those were humbucking P-90's from what I was told...

koula901 Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 What exactly is a humbucking P90 anyway? Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

LOL It is really, they just look like a P-90 and fit easily into the routing of a P-90, and have that P-90 vibe, without the noise..By the by, I just priced the Fralins, and it looks like I'll be playing my stock Gibby P-90s for a LONG TIME!!

Yeah..me too..It's a kick a@# tone..If I remember right Pete used a P-90 equipped SG on that recording..He liked Rickenbackers too though..Seems wierd he plays a Strat now..

The who was on a show not too long ago, maybe rock hall of fame awards. The actor comedian Adam Sandler I believe opened , he was alone with a HiWatt amp and a Gibson LP maybe an SG. He just basicly played a simple chunky open A chord riff. Great tone the amp must have been cranked. The Who came on and Pete played a Strat through what looked like Fender Amps stacked, tone was kind of weak. I thought Adam Sandler had the better tone not comparing anything else of course. FWIW

Very sterile without the liquid vibe the real p90s have. Are you talking about the ones with the slanted blade pole pieces? (those are the ones I've heard)
