My latest stupid idea...

So, I was sitting around and thinking about what I would do once I take delivery of my 357... The obvious thing to do is to order another Heritage, right? But it should be something different and weird. This has been bouncing around in my head for a few weeks now.

While re-reading my Tony Bacon Les Paul book I saw the 1983 "Spotlight Special" Les Paul, as seen below. This was a Nashville-built special run of about 211 units, supposedly to eat up some spare wood that was sitting around. There were two different types of Spotlight but the more famous one is the natural finish with brown binding, as seen below. Some of them had some pretty outrageous curly maple as well. The center strip is mahogany.

The G-guys did a Custom Shop reissue a few years ago, but I haven't seen any for sale. Supposedly very few were made at the usual extortionate $8000 each.

What do you guys think about the idea of an H-150 Spotlight? It would be ironic, because from what I've read, a lot of Spotlight owners refuse to believe that their guitars were made in Nashville. They cling to the idea that the Spotlight was about the last custom K-zoo Gibson made :)

If you dream it, they can and will build it!

I remember that one of our members has a Spotlight Special. It's one of the original ones, I believe...

It sounds like an interesting and doable guitar. Who knows, maybe the K-zoo gang will have a suggestion of their own, if they know you want something a bit different.

They might not make it because they don't want to do Gibsons design. Then again the lack of a template might be a deal breaker. The only way to know is to call up and talk to Marv. He seems to be the shop foreman.

As far as having a stupid idea.... your articles on your automotive site show that you have made a thousand stupid mistakes and have been able to learn from them. In that respect I feel a kinship with you. Lord knows I have stepped on my pecker many times and that is the price of learning. Don't try, don't do. You do. You succeed. Call Marv!

That's definitely not a "stupid idea". Even with your H357 on the way, if you have the funds, and this is a guitar that you dream about, then it would be worth submitting it to the factory to find out if they would put your ideas into real wood. The H150 continues to be a great, classic design and covers a wide range in the tone department. However, many of us continue to look to Gibson for inspiration (you are far from alone in this regard), and I am interested in what Heritage could do to step out and come up with a totally different guitar body shape that we have not as yet seen and one that would satisfy your idea of "something different and weird".

I saw those on Guitar Center's website. I thought it was a really cool design, but I believe you can still get them. But for less than half the Gibson price, you can get a Heritage H-150 made just like it.

Get what you want. You've got a very nice collection. What don't you have that you would really appreciate?

I think if you floated the idea of the Spotlight Special design to the boys on Parsons Street, that they'd give it a go.

Why not? It would just be another incredible custom one-off. They do that sort of thing every day!:icon_thumright:

By the way, here's an article about the original Spotlight Specials that you might find interesting.
