Kuz Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 P90's can be managed with a little volume reduction but man, I've got to find a local church of high gain in my neighborhood! During our contempory services where I am the director of the praise band, I use quite a tasteful bit of gain to thicken up and added emphasis to the choruses. And yes the P-90 Heritages are part of the rotation. I posted quite a few clips of Sean Costello playing in his quartet. No hum issues with his Lollar equipped Gold Tops!!! Here is the secret to P-90s (or other Single Coils for that matter).... Volume off between songs..... Volume on when playing. Yep that simple!!!
bolero Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Lollar P90's are killer pickups I have a set sitting here on the shelf, just waiting for the right gtr to come along...heh I actually like the hum...it adds character...plus I usually roll down the vol between songs anyway sometimes those neon lights etc cause problems though..but once the drummer kicks in, no one will ever notice
RJLII Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 I'll add my $0.02..... My 10 x 10 practice room has a dimmer switch, a low voltage desk lamp with integral transformer and computer with a bunch of wall warts powering peripherials. My Strat and Tele used to hum something fierce. My H-137 on the other hand, makes no perceptable noise unless I place the guitar right next to the dimmer switch or lean it against my amplifier where it gets influenced by the transformers. As others have said, it makes no noise at all in the middle postion due to the RWRP relationship between the pickups. I also have an H-150 knock-off from a company in Tennesee that has P-90s. Kind of like what Heritage would have made had they been in business in 1956. No noise there either. That being the case I have to surmise that the P-90 by nature is less prone to 60 cycle hum than a Fender pickup.

The P 90s you've been using are probably well shielded. The Lollar P 90s have braided shielding on them, which lessens the hum.

Not the Lollars of course but the current ones produced by that off-brand company in TN...

Not the Lollars of course but the current ones produced by that off-brand company in TN... Not speaking from what I've heard, but rather speaking from personal experience. My Fenders were miserable loud. My H-137 and R6 are both very quiet. Perhaps I'm just lucky.
Hfan Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I have Lollar p-90 on my 150 from 2010. They are noisy when I have large amounts of gain or very high volume but that is only between songs and a little volume roll back cures it. When I am playing I can only hear the music not the buzz. I love the tone. I have a strat with S Duncan 5/2 pickups that sound great but they cannot not compare to the p-90 tone imo. The strat is shielded very well so there is less noise than the p-90's but they have no shielding. I love the p-90's so much I am saving up for a set for my ES 347, they will have to be the type that fit into a double coil hole though. I recently shielded my Strat and was amazed at the amount of hum reduction, and the tone seems to have come alive more. Has anyone shielded a p 90 guitar with similar results?
