chico Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I talked to Ren a few months back about bringing my H155 in to get the pots changed out. I don't like how 'loose' they are, I prefer pots that require more effort to turn than a feather touch, which mine seem to be like. Ren said sure, that some players like em loose, just depends. (insert your comedy rim shot line here) anyway, I prefer my pots to require more resistance. thoughts on that anyone? I figure mine are just loose from all the years (since 2000) of playing, though I didn't buy the guitar new so I don't know how they came from the factory. Ren said he could just swap em out, give em to someone who prefers that looser response. attached a pic of the axe so you could see the pots I presently have. I did changout the tailpiece and bridge after these shots were taken.
pegleg32 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Dang Chico, why don't you send that thing over to me. I'll fix those pots in no time at all, maybe 6 months or so. I love that axe.
High Flying Bird Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Ray, if you want your pots to be tighter find some you like and change them or have somebody change them for you. I like high action on my guitars and I don't care what others think about it. It is my guitar and I want it the way I want it. Get some tighter pots and do it. Changing the pots out on that guitar should be easy for someone who can handle soldiering and wiring.
kbp810 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I'm with you on this Chico, I like a pot that has a little more friction to it as well... makes me feel like I can dial in more consistently. The P/P pots I just put in the Blue 150 when I switched pups are lower friction and they're driving me crazy! (new ones are already in transit) Like HFB said though, if you can handle a soldering iron, do them yourself! They're not that hard to swap out, especially on a solid body (changing them through F-holes can be mildly nerve wrecking though )
chico Posted April 19, 2011 Author Posted April 19, 2011 thanks for the responses, I still don't the confidence to do that job myself. But, it is nice to know that it isn't a big deal. and pegleg, you keep your mitts off my millie actually, I'll bring it to PSP IV and you can see why I love it SO much... and, did you notice it had HRW's and silver hardware? another Heritage custom build..
DetroitBlues Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I like a little control on the pots. Keeps me from accidently adjusting them. Having some resistence helps lock in the tone, but too much resistance and you'll have a heck of time doing volume swells.
tulk1 Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I do believe at the PSPIII tour Ren mentioned they were using custom designed pots with more friction for current production guitars. I know the pots in my Millie NFH and the Prospect Custom both have more resistance than the other Heritage's I've had/have. One reason I had to put speed knobs on them. Couldn't get a good grip fast enough with the top hats.
pushover Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Interesting.. I actually like 'em fairly loose. Not sloppy loose (that's more how I like my women...), but loose enough so that i can tweak/adjust the level with one finger and not have to pull away from what I'm trying to play. I actually find the pots on my 535 a little too stiff for my taste, but my milli-DC and 157 are just right.. I guess its a preference thing.
