blues24 Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I recently bought a 1992 555, it has the Schaller hardware.... Has anyone upgraded Their hardware? I like to get rid of the roller bridge and tail piece.. Any info shared would be great...
GASguy Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I'm very interested in this topic also. I have a 2001 555 with the stock Schaller tailpiece and bridge combo. Appearance is not a consideration for me; I think the stock Schaller hardware gives a Heritage vibe that I kind of like. Tone and playability considerations are more important to me and I have been wondering about the advisability of upgrading to say Tone Pros locking hardware? Comments and opinions on this?

I have a H140CM.I changed the tail piece to a standard stop bar,set to the correct height, keep the bridge,it's better than a tune o matic. My pal Mark555 also changed the pups on his 555 to great effect. My previous entries discuss these changes. Joey Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I have a 1995 H555 and just this year I changed the bridge to a Callaham AB1 as well as the tail piece to the traditional Gibson type from Tone Pro. I also put in a set of Fralin Pure PAF pups. The changes made an incredible improvement to the tone of this guitar. These changes have made this such a versatile guitar to play, jazz, blues, rock etc. Also let me say, that I made the bridge change prior to the pup upgrade which made a notable change acoustically to the guitar which opens up the tone when amplified. My Les Paul, Strat, Tele and other guitars are getting very little play time. Lastly, I kept the tuners which I found to be high quality.
blues24 Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Guy's can you tell us if you had to do any mods, to install the tail and bridge pieces?... Also, what size spacing? I was going with Faber, but I really like to change the tail piece if any... Thanks
Joey Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 No alterations to the guitar for my upgrades were necessary. It was just a parts swap. Also, these changes were just improvements/customizing, and not required. I played the guitar for 15 years prior to making any changes except for strings. However, the modifications I made vastly improved the tone of the guitar.

Hfan Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I'm just learning this stuff myself. I just replaced the stop tail on my 157. I bought a Gotoh. They are only about $20 from Stew Mac and the gurus on the Les Paul forums swear they are the same as the tone pros but without the locking set screws and are much cheaper. I find them more actractive than the Schaller tailpieces, I think the tone approved as well. I just posted some relevant stuff in the family tree section. Order the non metric size and it should be a simple swap. Lots of posts here if you search. Some members here leave the Schaller roller bridge installed as did I. My Luthier also likes them. It gives a good break angle and is adjustable side to side and is ,as per more experienced members here, quite sturdy. Just watch the rollers don't move during string changes etc. You could add a little lock tite (non permanent..blue) or notch them if you want them permanently fixed.
blues24 Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Great stuff!! I will change the stop piece only. I like the bridge as it is... I'm going to try a faber wrap around.
