unikh550 Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Am going to replace the Grover Imperials that were installed by Heritage whrn I custom ordered my H-550 in '98. They have been flimsy and have dropped knobs, etc., over the years. A guitar tech friend of mine said that Schallers are still made in Germany, and are probably the most sturdy, which is my main requirement. He said that Grovers were great when they were made in Cleveland, but are now cheap in quality since they've become Korean. If I go with Schallers, which are sturdier, their M-6 or their locking tuners? if no difference, will go with the M-6. Was told by the tech that the ratio does not really matter as far as keeping in tune, but merely suggests how many times the post turns around, or something technical like that. Suggestions? Thanks.- Charles Bevell
GuitArtMan Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 My favorite non-locking tuner are the TonePros Klusons.
strings Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 sperzels rock.............or jazz blues country hip hop etc etc etc

unikh550 Posted May 4, 2011 Author Posted May 4, 2011 sperzels rock.............or jazz blues country hip hop etc etc etc Like that satin chrome on their locking tuners, but have been told by this tech, who has them in stock-that they are of poor quality. Probably will go with the Schaller M-6 since Stew-Mac has the chrome ones for $61+s/h.Play .15-52, so I need strong posts. I change strings every 10 days or so.
sheetsofsound Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 the current grovers are fine. I'd get the 18:1 ratio versions now. Spertzels are junk IMO. Made for rock guys with .009 strings.
strings Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 sperzel's..........i run heavy 11's on mine , never had a problem, don't play rock.......... just my opinion

When did Grover manufacturing go off shore? If you place an order with Stew Mac, check out their Parsons Street t shirt in their accessories dept, I like mine.
bolero Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I have used Grover's forever, and love them finally tried the imperials, and they are fantastic as well, never had any go bad....but all my gtrs are old lol, maybe all US made I would get an 18:1 ratio.....lower are too finicky to tune, higher you need to wind the things too much. 18 is just right, IMO I do have some Gotoh's on a strat ( vintage looking locking tuners ) and am impresed with them, they might make LP style pegs
sheetsofsound Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 sperzel's..........i run heavy 11's on mine , never had a problem, don't play rock.......... just my opinion .011s aren't heavy. .015s are heavy. I once tried to use .013s on spertzels and it failed miserably. Didn't fit. Also, they mechanism wears over time and you have to start screwing the thumb screw tighter and tighter. And then the gear ratio is very high (12:1) as opposed to 18:1 on the better tuners. The 12:1 works fine with .008 or .009 though.
sheetsofsound Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 i have 4 old heritage guitars with grovers and the grovers work great.
Kuz Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 All four of 150s have the iveroid Sperzel tuners. I string them with 10s. The iveroid Sperzels look great and work great with 10s and NEVER had ant problems. I wouldn't put iveroid Sperzels on a 550, but to say Sperzel don't work with 10s or 11s is ludicrous! David Grissom picked Sperzels for his signature PRS and he uses ( and the guitar comes shipped) strung with 11s.

Jazzpunk Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Made for rock guys with .009 strings... Nobody said it, but somebody "typed" it. Sheets didn't specify that the tuners did not work for him with 10's or 11's. I believe he clarified above that his negative experience with the sperzels was with 13's and up.
sheetsofsound Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Made for rock guys with .009 strings... Nobody said it, but somebody "typed" it. like I said. Good thing nobody said that. I never said they don't work with .011s .
Kuz Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Wow, OK, I am sorry if when Sheets typed "Spertzels are junk IMO. Made for rock guys with .009 strings" he really meant "They are great for guitars strung with .011s, .010, .009s". I just took what he typed as literal, that Sperzels are really only designed for rock players using very light .009 strings. I was just going by what he typed and to offer a counter opinions, because recently I have had a couple of HOC members as me about options for a custom Heritage and they know I have ordered 5 custom Heritage guitars. So he meant what he typed, it's no problem, it's his opinion and we can agree to disagree. If he meant that Sperzels are fine for .008s thru .011s then I am sorry I didn't understand that.
Jazzpunk Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 I've got Sperzals on my 525 and they're fine. Look cool too! Never tried them with 13's and above though.

You pwned me totally. I guess I really know nothing about guitars. I'm going back to video games and cheap gibsons. If i post a picture with all my heritage guitars in a circle in front of the fireplace can I get back in?

I am having a hard time understand and just want to leave well enough alone.
Jazzpunk Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 One of my sperzel tuners on my 525 just stripped. Pretty much as described in this thread I found: http://collingsforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8021042224/m/51710894 Does anyone know if the loctite solution actually works or will I need to buy a replacement tuner?
DetroitBlues Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Now that I think about it, once I learned how to string up a guitar properly as well as put a little graphite in the nut, I've found the grovers on my epiphone worked just fine. Not saying anything about anyone else, but I found that worked best for me.
