The Heritage Mandolin, again

I know I've posted pics of the H-40 A-style Mandolin, before. But, I had it out, going over some tunes. And thought, heck, can't hurt to post again. Here she is with a Schatten passive pickup. None invasive, non-destructive installation. It all comes off with a tug. :icon_thumright:

That's what she said! Oops - sorry, Mods. Too many Office reruns.

Yeh, Kenny - that's a pretty mando. Nice pics. Glad it's working out for you. Haven't had mine out in a while, although do get to pluck sometimes on Sat's when the other mando players are breaking. Fun instrument - always sits easily on top of teh mix.

It would be hard for Heritage to deny that finish.

When does this get played? In Tracy's band?

How do you play one of those? Like a four string guitar? Is it easy to play?

It's like the top 4 strings of a guitar..upside down. G,D,A,E.

Because the neck is so small, the chord shapes are a bit different.

Thanks for the pics, Kenny. Mandolins are just an amazing amount of tone for a small package. And it's great to see a real Heritage one.

That thing sure is pretty Kenny. One thing I can't figure out. What is the sort of raised portion along the bottom of the front. Is that like an arm rest or something. Looks like maybe you crook the thing under your arm and that gives you something to grip?

Yep, it's an arm rest. Helps to put the arm in the correct position for fingering. Keeps the arm off the top of the mandolin. The resonance of the mandos is affected greatly when they touch either your arm or your belly/chest - depending on where you carry it.

The mandolin is strung like a fiddle, backwards from a guitar. Works on a scale of 5ths, rather than 4ths like a guitar, too. They're fun to chord. Not all that tough to get the basic chords down, either. They start to make sense once you've played them a few times. Flats are kind of weird, tho'. ... well, for me, anyway.

Katie and hubby had one of these on their mandolin last year. Supposed to be the stuff for keeping it away from the body. Tone Gard.
