Genericmusic Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I have a line on a Heritage Patriot amp. What can anybody tell me about it? I do the swing/jazz thing with a Classic Eagle. Good/bad for what I do? Asking price is $850. Good/bad deal? What are some things I should be looking for when I go to see it?

That price seems in the ballpark and fair asuming good condition, maybe you could get him down a little. In general, Heritage amps are very well regarded. A boutique amp at a reasonable price. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the Patriot kind does the Fender Super Reverb deal. Some here have said it does it better. Should be lots of head room for your style, sounds like an Eagle and a Patriot should go well. If you search , lots of old threads here. I would love one myself or a Victory.
tulk1 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Advert spin for the Patriot: Heritage Amps – The Patriot Combo Guitar Amp The Patriot Combo Amp from Heritage has 45 watts of power from two 6l6 tubes or two EL34's in a two 12" speaker arrangement. The amp goes from blackface clean tones to a tweed-style break up. The Patriot is perfect for styles ranging from blues, country, jazz and classic rock.

I was really looking for someone that uses one that could tell me about their idiosyncrasies.
Genericmusic Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 Advert spin for the Patriot: Thanks, I saw that on-line too. I guess it's time for a road trip to check it out.
rjsanders Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 imho the asking price of $850 is way low. by far my favorite Fender blackface-style amp of any model, incl. Fender...loud as hell, lotsa clean headroom, extremely articulate, great feel, user bias pots, great EQ, xlnt reverb. i've played the 1x12 and the 2x12
brentrocks Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Brent would know! welllllll...i know a litle about amps, not a lot....but a Patriot 2x12 for under 1000 in good condition is a good deal....they were like 2200 new

I was really looking for someone that uses one that could tell me about their idiosyncrasies. i had a '65-'67 BFSR for over 10 years. it had the CTS AlNiCos, which were by far my preference of SR speakers. there's a biff diff between a 4x10 sound & 2x12, so that's strictly a matter of taste/preference. the Patriot i played had 2 Celestion G12H30s, a really good do-all speaker, IMHO. its cab construction (through-dovetail joints, wood selection) is superior to anything Fender ever produced. transformers are Heyboer or Merc, custom-spec'd by PaulC, so same thing there. 3-band EQ, completely predictable + MOOD control to dial in/out negative feedback. weighs about the same as a BFSR, 60lb range. great reverb, non-master volume but loves pedals of all kinds (BFs can be kinda picky with ODs, etc....). designed and built by Paul Cochrane and his merry band in Brentwood, TN. to my mind (components, construction, hand-built by guitar player-engineer) it's just superior to Fender stuff. put in EL34-types or 6L6-types and bias it yourself in <5 mins. with a multimeter & screwdriver, adjust to your taste. easily worth $2K used for anyone wanting that sound.

MSRP on the 2x12 combo was $2750. typically you could find them new for 2/3 of that via dealers.

I only meant you'd know a good deal when it shows itself...
Fernando Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I paid $1200 for my Patriot, which I bought used. It still looks brand new and sounds incredible. What I really like about it is the wide range of tonal possibilities.
Genericmusic Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 I had a friend check it out. Here is the story. The Patriot is owned by a touring metal head who can't squeeze the sound he wants out of it. I was told it appears in good condition with two 12" Cerwin Vega speakers rated at 30 watts each. The J. Hale Music site states that the Patriot came with the option of 1x12 or 2x10 Speakers. http://www.jhalemusic.com/pages/heritageAmps.html I must assume we are talking about 2x10's instead of 2x12's unless anyone knows different. I do not know much about Cerwin Vega speakers. Are they a quality speaker or not? Were they stock or did one specify what type of speaker they wanted when they ordered the amp? A road trip is in store for me to play this amp. I won't buy anything with out play it first. Does anyone have anymore information about what I should be looking/listening for before I make the road trip?

Can't speak for present day CVs, but in the past Cerwin-Vega were of the same quality as JBL/Altec Lansing and were used in large PA boxes. Bottom line: Should be very clear

Does anyone have anymore information about what I should be looking/listening for before I make the road trip? the J. Hale Patriot pic is an oldie, 1st year of production. style & logo changed after that to what you see in the Briton at the bottom for the remaining 3 or 4 years. the 2x10 config is not advertised in the company lit, which is a source of my info, so maybe that's an early adopter config. C-V was known for clean, efficient,flat-response sound in the '60's & '70's (JBL, E-V, Altec). looks like they're a PA company now. old C-V's might be just the ticket for a clean jazz sound. i don't know of any custom ordering of speakers with H. Amps. they tended to like Celestion. for some models, like the Vic combo (G12H30) or Colonial (H30 + V30) or Briton II w/Celestion Blues, the speaker choice was made by the designer & his team for a specific sound. that doesn't mean they won't sound great with others - my heads sound great through a number of cabs & speaker combinations. a Colonial *cranked* (like fully cranked clockwise on both volumes) through 2x12 EVM-12Ls is *somethin'* first thing you should look & listen for is a sound & feel you like. and that's about it. 'course for $850 you might look for signs it's hot - ask to see receipt
bolero Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 a rare & exceptional speaker CV made for gtr was called the ER-123, they were early '70's & sound fantastic..if it has them you are in luck!
Genericmusic Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 Thank you all for the info. The deal fell through. The story about the amp as well as the price changed before I even began the road trip. I walked away. If it is too good to be true it most likely is. The hunt continues.
DC Ron Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Right thing to do. That being said, my Heritage amp is truly a work of art, inside and out, and a sweet player for everything from jazz to blues to rock. Probably not metal, but...you never know.

There is a supposedly new old stock Patriot on the Bay, quite a bit more money though. http://cgi.ebay.com/HERITAGE-PATRIOT-TUBE-GUITAR-AMPLIFER-/290567315714?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a7296102
