Replace P90's in H150....maybe

Hey all. I have a 2006 H150 Goldtop with the Lollar P90's. Best guitar I've ever owned. I love the tone of the Lollar's but I am considering replacing with a noiseless option. I played some of Fralin's noiseless P90's and I thought they sounded great. Tom Anderson also has a new noiseless P90 available. I like the Lollars. I probably won't switch. But if do, does anybody know how deep the cavity is in the H150. I guess I could always just check myself but I thought I check if there was a quick answer to save me a bit of time. Thanks for any input.

I know. I do love the tone. I will probably end up changing nothing. The hum isn't too bad. Somedays it bothers me more than others. Really just putting some information together.

Lollars are the best p-90's imo...

The perfect solution: ANOTHER Heritage w/Humbuckers. :)

Amen brother, preach on!!!!

As the self-appointed P-90 Czar (which really means nothing)... I have a 535, 525, & 150 with Lollar P-90s and if you want the P-90 tone.... then it's got to be Lollar P-90s for me.

The hum never seemed to be a problem for Sean (one of the best P-90 tones in HISTORY).... Of the noiseless versions I have heard they seem to compressed for me. It's really a matter a compromise; a little hum for A LOT OF TONE!!!!

And that's just a small sample.

Yet Will does not think this Marietta Ga bluesman should be in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

Come on Will!

VT Goose,

I have an H 137 that came with Lollar P90s from the factory. I have extreme hum problems in my condo, so I had to switch to a noiseless option. The day that I realized how close the Lollars sounded to the Fralins was the day I decided to pull the trigger. The Fralin P90s have great tone and no noise. I couldln't speak to the size of the cavity but I can tell you that the covers didn't fit originally because Fralin was sending the wrong size. I emailed him and told him two other Heritage players also had a problem with the covers not fitting, so he realized he was sending the wrong size and graciously sent the correct sized covers. My guitar tech didn't have to mess with the cavity at all, so I'm guessing if you ever bought Fralins, that it would now be a perfect fit-cover and all. And you'd be happy with the sound, too. To my ears, they sound just about exactly same, or so close that any difference is undetectable.

You're right. I took a couple days to play it and really focus on the issue. The tone is just too good. I don't want to risk it with another pickup. The hum isn't too bad and actually pretty manageable by using the volume knob more. Thanks for everyone's comments/opinions.

And since you are the "czar" do you have any suggestions/tips for pickup height adjustments for the P90's? I do think I need to lower my neck pup a touch but just curious if you have any good tips or rules of thumb. This is my first guitar with P90's. THanks

I've heard good things about Lindy Fralin p-90s. I currently have a set being put in one of my Hamer Specials.

Another option is to try shielding tape in the cavity, you get to greatly reduce the hum and keep the original pups. P90s are single coils correct? I just did my Strat and it made a huge difference. Stew mac sells it pretty cheap. I was considering doing my Hamer Special with original Duncan P90s but after looking at the cavity, it was just too neat and untouched for me to dive into it, may sound a little strange. The hum isn't that bad anyway.

T Bone, let me know how the new Fralin's compare in your Special, I'm curious.

The OP asked about how to adjust the p up height. I usually start high and work my way lower until it sounds good to me, then try to match the p ups regarding output levels.

Will do. Both of my specials have the same pickups, and they are VERY hot outoput wise. I think they are the SD Hot and Custom, which are nice, but the output is probably higher than a lot of humbuckers. One friend who has a special says they might be the hottest pickups he owns.

So, the Fralins are a lot more "vintage" than the super hot SDs, so it should be a nice difference.

There are two screws (not the pole piece screws) that you can screw down tight on the neck pup, then raise the pole pieces on the bridge pup to try to meet the output of the neck pup. I have 3 Heritages with Lollar p-90s and the neck pup is always a little louder (which it was on vintage guitars as well) since it is closer to the neck of the guitar.

After the above adjustments, turn you amp up, listen for the slight hum, and realize that after the first chord or riff... the only thing you or the audience is hearing is the tone from the heavens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kuz, are you saying that equaling the height of the pups will help cancel the noise? Are these dog ears or soap bars? Or both? Are you talking about the screws that hold the pups to the body or screws under the cover?

This sounds pretty slick. We need to have a home remedy section in this joint. This tip might save somebody the trouble of having to buy new pickups.

I have never notices the noise on my Phat Cats or the one Laller fitted guitar I owned. But with my playing that is the least of my worries.

Ron, sorry if I didn't make it a little clearer. The screws I am talking about are on the soap-bar p-90s and they can adjust the height of the soap-bar in a very limited amount. This helps to equalize the output (volume) between the two, but the neck will noramally be louder, so then you usually need to raise the pole pieces in the bridge to get more output to offset the louder neck pup.

THIS will not do anything + or - to any hum.

I have brought my GT 150 P-90 to every PSP and play it at home & church and never had any hum issue EVER.

I guess if you have "dirty" power or plug into an outlet with a Bud Light sign it could be a slight issue. My point is P-90s & Single coils (Strats & Teles) have been around for over 60 years and some of the greatest music ever made has been recorded & played live with the pickups and no one has ever had that big a deal over the hum.

If you watch what Sean Costello and other professional guitarist do/have done, is to turn the volume off on your guitar between songs, then turn it up to play the next song, ..... rinse & repeat!!!!
