koula901 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Hi Folks, Dreaming about the day when I can order my next 150. Right now I think that I want mini-hums, and a weight-relieved guitar. The question is this, if I have the guitar routed for mini hums, then, if I change my mind later on and want to put full-sized hums in it, is it easy enough to have someone rout out the guitar for the larger sized hums, than it would be to get a 150 with regular sized humbuckers, but then change my mind and put mini-hums in (which, I believe are smaller). Hope this is clear.

Hope this is clear. I'm sure it could be done... but the other alternative would be soapbars which is the same sized rout. I was thinking the same kind of thing on my 157 order; the Mini's are sort of new to me, but I really, really, wanted a guitar with them - so I pulled the trigger under the notion that if it was a bust I could default to soapbars. After playing with the Undercover Mini set (HB Sized Mini's) for a while in my 150 though, I'm fairly certain the mini's will stay

They were very articulate and very touch sensitive; they were a bit brighter, which I balanced with raising my tone caps from .022's to .033's. The part I really loved about them was this really cool vintage sounding growl that they brought to an otherwise clean amp - the absolute best was playing them through Steiner's Vibro King (and if I recall correctly he had to eventually cut power to the whole house and have the local authorities escort me off his property to get me to stop playing it). Back to that touch sensitive part - on one side it was great, you chould change the volume and tone just by changing up the attack.... on the other side, while the pups greatly rewarded correct notes, they also punished wrong notes. They really forced me to play the notes and chords correctly - which in the end I do still view as a good thing, kept me from getting lazy or sloppy while playing (which are two words that generally describe my playing )

For the rout part - to the best of my knowledge, the cutout for mini's is the same size as for soapbar P90's - so they should be interchangeable Though if I am mistaken I sure hope someone will correct me on that post-haste!
big bob Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 They would not let me order my 170 with both mini hums and LW. They said the jigs would not work. This might be due to mine having three minis though.
DetroitBlues Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Sounds like a great idea. I can't wait to break in KBP810 new H-157 when he gets it in!

I'll hijack for a second to post a pic of an old LP Custom with 3 soapbars. I just like it .
FredZepp Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Fred Are those soapbars P90s? or minis? Old P-90s... mini's would have the polepieces off center, like a humbucker. I think it's a cool old LP that is a bit different.. and no, it's not one of mine. But I wish it was ....
big bob Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I love the sound of mine, real sharp attack, more highs, crisp, articulate, but can also get good and crunchy. Great for surf/ rock/rockabilly/jazz. you name it.. My 170 is my go to guitar for use with the band, However the others do slip in from time to time.
koula901 Posted June 3, 2011 Author Posted June 3, 2011 that is a beauty - never get tired of looking at it. when you combine the to mini pups, do you get a big beefy sound, or does it just get louder?

When I play with the band I usually play just bridge, then for solo switch to bridge/mid. When I switch I get a huge boost in volume and great tone for solo.
