My Gig-to-Gig Dilemma!

I'm sure some of you feel the same way with your collections.... While I purchased the Roy Clark Custom to fill the void left by selling my 535, it's really not at all the same, particularly not with the TI Bebop 13's that I strung it with. As a jazzer, my two current Heritages have that bizarre trait of being "Similar, but Completely Different, yet Similar, yet...."!! No question, though; The RC is the way to go on these hot, humid outdoor gigs....It kills through a tube amp! Will amend with sharp photo later!!

Yeah, I have the same dilemma sometimes with my 535 and my Eagle Classic but, as you know, it's a good dilemma to have. If I want that extra cream and wood tone happening, though, I go with the Eagle Classic every time.

What exactly is the dilemma? You've got two great guitars that can do the job. Maybe you should bring both because of the need for a backup.

I do bring 'em both....The dilemma is when I'm in the middle of a tune, and out of the corner of my eye, I see the one I'm not currently playing...It's sayin' "Play me!"... :icon_biggrin:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.... I do feel your pain. I have five terrific Heritages, an embarrassment of riches. I have ample opportunity to play all of them out, and I try.... But...I now just find myself slipping into the 535 almost every gig.... I'm growing...ashamed....

Do you think maybe you could talk to my wife, she thinks I'm crazy. I told her I could hear my guitars calling to me "play me, play me". At least I'm not the only one. :icon_cyclops:

I learned long ago not to personify my guitars in conversation with my wife!

Is the KB a longer scale length?

Hey Moonpi, no; it's still 24 3/4", which was a strong factor in my narrowing of choices.. I've always managed that scale more effortlessly than the longer scales. I considered the Sweet 16 at one time, but for my purposes, I just knew that I wanted to stay with a laminate top and "G" scale-length, plus the thickness of the KB is a pleasant trade-off in replacing the ES-175 body.

....As for talking to your wives, I'm not your guy right now... The 535 that I sold early this year was a birthday gift from mine; The arrival of the Roy Clark Custom triggered one too many questions. :vava_mini:

..On the bright side, I have a small persian rug in my doghouse.

Jimbob, your dilemma isn't which Heritage; It's which AMP! Your taste in tubage is IMPECCABLE. How do you like the Carol Anns, especially in contrast to the Fuchs? I only got as far as aquiring a Fuchs-modded Twin (all 85 lbs. of it!), and that was tonal nirvana.

Thanks, GRMjazz! I use all of my amps, but I don't have much of a dilemma at all in which one to choose. The Carol Anns are the rock and blues-rock machines, and I primarily use the H-150 and H-110 with those amps. The Fuchs amps are a bit smoother - more like a Dumble - and I use the 535 and Teles as well as the guitars mentioned above if I'm playing funk and fusion-type gigs. The Glaswerks gets the vote for small clubs, rehearsals, jams, jazz combos and whatnot. It's essentially my "grab-n-go" amp. For the combo gigs, the Eagle Classic and the Glaswerks is usually my preference.

The Carol Anns in particular sort of remind me of a cross between a Dumble and an old Marshall JTM45 Plexi that I had years ago. They can definitely capture the smoother Marshall vibe of players like Duane Allman, Betts, Clapton, Jimmy Page (to a lesser extent), etc. However, they don't do the metal thing very well at all, but that's ok with me since I don't play that stuff anyway. Although, Alan (Carol Ann) is now releasing an amp called the Triptik that caters more to the modern rock thing. All in all, the clean channels are great, and the OD channels generally pick up from where the clean channels leave off. The master volumes are very similar to the Fuchs and very usable at low (bedroom levels) to high volume live levels. They're by far my favorite amp company these days.

Of course, with the Fuchs mod you have, I'm sure you're well aware what those amps will do. They're great amps! While I'm not using mine quite as often as I once did, they're both great amps, and they certainly won't be going anywhere anytime soon. I guess you could say that I've ridden the "boutique amp ride," so to speak, but after trying out a gazillion used amps while spending way too much money...LOL...I finally settled on the amps I currently have, and each one does its own thing very well.

Anyway, I hope that somewhat answers your question.

Your guitars are simply amazing!

Congrats! :drink_mini:

I have also a sort of dilemma:I own two cousins, a h575 custom and a es 175;preferring two sisters, the es 175 is now for sale, which Heritage model is closer to the sound of the es175?

Posted

Does that work the other way, too? :P

In fact, no, Dixie. My guitars are much more understanding of my long-standing relationship with my wife....

I played a 550 once that had a lot of the sonic vibe, but I think it's the longer scale... A discontinued model was a bit closer (I think it was the 516), specwise. I also played one once, that, I'm pretty sure, was a size, spec and construction match for the KB GrooveMaster, but with the two-pickup arrangement (maybe that was, in fact, the 516).

If your question is framed in the context of my two guitars, the KB is way closer to the es175; the Roy Clark is a semi-hollow. Check some of these members' lineups of guitars; you're sure to find a 516 owner in here who could give you a better answer.

Then you have to draw straws and switch guitars between songs! :icon_thumleft:
