Strap Lock Installation Anxiety

I have installed Schaller strap locks on most of my angled-headstock guitars, as I am uber-paranoid of them falling off the strap and sustaining a headstock break. I have not tried this on my 2 hollow body guitars, my H-525 and my Ibanez AF-105, as I am wondering if the screws for the new strap buttons will be large enough to find purchase in the back end of these guitars. Also, do I have to unstring the whole thing to do this otherwise-seemingly-simple procedure? Please advise!

I don't have any hollow body guitars, but my mandolins are set up just like that on the tailpiece. The outside screws will hold just fine as you replace the strap pins with the strap locks. As for " screw purchase", I always try the original screw first. Many times it'll fit the inside the lock just fine.

Fret not. The strap buttons should come out with a simple screwdriver. The fasteners around the button will hold the tailpiece.

Thanks, Kenny, I knew one of you "pros" would know what to do. On another note, if you think "screw purchase" means buying a hooker, you might be a Redneck! :laugh_mini:

You shouldn't have to un-string to change out the strap button (unless I misread what you are trying to do?); I like the schaller locks, but the screw they provide is a bit smaller in diameter than others; I generally either go to the hardware store and get a different screw, or I like to add a sliver of a toothpick in with the screw to give it extra bite.

Thanks Greg and Brian! I'd like to get this done soon, as I honestly don't play the 525 as much as I might otherwise, because of my paranoia.

Also, I always run the screw over a candle to get wax between the threads. This facilitates the screw being run into the hole, and, thus, reduces the possibility of the new screw splitting the wood....
