H140 Goldtop

I am pulling the trigger on an H140 Goldtop with Schaller PU's and tailpiece. its a 96' . What are thoughts on pickups? It has humbuckers but I really was interested in P90s. here are my questions:

1) how are the P90 drop ins for regular humbucker cavities.

2) should I bother changing the Schaller tailpiece? It looks good to me so I wouldn't do it for a aesthetic purpose. I just don't know the quality of that hardware.

Also, this guitar is 8 to 9 lbs. Is that a good weight for a H140? It seems like a SERIOUS improvement from my 13lb H150.

I have a 140 with '57 classics in it and they sound great. For the P90 drop in's,go with Phat Cats. They do the job but you lose a bit of the P90 grit. I happen to prefer that. The Schaller tailpiece is a very good piece of hardware but is a bit heavy. I replaced mine with a Tone Pros locking stoptail. It lighter and doesn't slide off the guitar when I polish my frets.

Mikenov:

I have Duncan Phat Cats in both my 576 and my 150.  They sound terrific, very P-90, in both applications.                ;D

I'm with 'fiddler on the mojo quotient!  As in other things...you wanna play it or you wanna just buff it...?      :confused1:    I think that's the first all gold one we've seen.  Very cool!  Congrats!

Agreed. My H150 has some battle scars too. But I was going for full disclosure there. Now who wants to call the wife and explain why I NEEDED another axe? Anyone , Anyone, Buehler, Buehler?

You mean to say you didn't seek prior approval?  Jump into that fiery pit...again???  Not me!!!        :angryfire:

I don't know if I didn't have aproval.. she knew what I was up to. She didn't say yes , she didn't say no.

She asked this morning : "So, are you gonna get that thing or what? "

I said, "uh, don't know."

Her question implied I had free reign to make a call and she HAD to know what call I would make. I just told her we had a little bundle of joy coming. She said, you spent your half of the economic stimulus, now its my turn!

How about the SD P-Rails... Possibly best of both worlds...

Brent has a pair in his Gary Moore so he could give you an opinion.

Here's a Youtube clip, it's been posted before but it's probably easier to re post rather than have you look for it...

Oh... And that's a Heritage he's playing... 8)

;D ;D ;D ;DThats So Cool!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

I remember the thread on these. That was just amazing.  That is a real option. And I recognized the H170. Makes me want one. I deffinately could do some pretty cool things here. The guy I bought it from was suggesting Fralin P92s which I guess is another option. For now I am just going to play it. I wish it was going to be here tomorrow so I could play it out.  What a cool concept. Its deffinately is worth looking into.

Cooool!

Say Mikenov, do you play in a band and earn some money? I always give that to my wife and tell her to buy something nice.

Another more serious cure I read on this forum could be to take her out to a harbour with all kinds of boats for sale and telling her you've been dreaming about buying one to go out sailing together. Be overly enthousiastic. You will notice with your next Heritage that she's happy you changed your boat plans and bought another guitar.

This is some good advice. Where I live is by the Chain Of Lakes state park. Its the Illinois boating mecca. There is boat on every other driveway in my neighborhood. That might work. But she is VERY supportive so I really shouldn't complain too much. My current gig gets my $50 a week but this summer we will be playing surounding bars and that should help with the money side of things. Really I need to start focusing on playing my gear now rather than buying it. I got some cool stuff I need to get into now so I think a hiatus is in order. this website sure doesn't make it easy though >:D  >:D  >:D  >:D

TONE REPORT ******

so I finally got this sucker plugged in. I like it! but the schaller pickups are going to have to go. Until now I had never heard them They seem almost like they have too much gain or something. Like going through a clean amp they overdrive even at low volume but the sound is still kind of thin. I deffinately don't like the bridge pickup. I am kind of liking the neck one though. A little thin but decent tone. It doesn't sound bad. Just VERY different from any of the Seymour Duncans I have in my other guitars. So, obviously my tone journey is not over on this axe. That being said, I love the feel of this guitar. The neck is almost as wide as my H150 but thinner. the action low and fast. The frets good and neck straight. It keeps good tune too. I am counting this a success with an even more promising future. With the feel of this axe it could be a future #1.

I could use opinions on the following :

I found the tone on this axe thinner, les meaty. My 150 is the heaviest guitar I have EVER played so its much darker but how much of this can I contribute to the Schaller pickups?

This axe doesn't have the sustain of my H150 either. How much of that can I contribute to the Schaller hardware?

I know its almost impossible for someone to know this but it worth a shot before rippin' and replacin'

Do the Schallers give a lot of feedback too? I had that on my 1988 VIP2 guitar and on a 1988 127 model. I tried to find out through Heritage and Schaller which type of buckers they were, but nobody knew! So I'm wondering if they stopped using them somewhere in the Eighties and switched to different Schallers by the time they made your 1996 H 140.

I had Seymour Duncan Alnico II pro humbuckers installed in the VIP2 the other day. I chose them because the all maple body could use some warming up. Great improvement. My tech thought the Schallers were no good too.

Good luck with your search for something better!

hi there uncle Jacque and everybody !

here we go ... i had stock schallers on H-150CM and replaced 'em with pairs of SD'59. The change in tone was noticeable. Schallers gave kinda muddy sound while SD59 opened up the tone in presence and high. Bridge 59 has been changed for Gibson Historic 57 Plus
