golferwave Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 My new old Heritage H-150. After pricing a new H-150 with the TV Jones Classic (filtertron) pickups, I decided on a do it yourself project. I picked up this 1999 beater and ordered the pickups. So it has the new pickups, CTS 500k pots, Bumblebee capacitors, bone nut, new switchcraft 3 way switch, new switchcraft jack plug & plate, aluminum tailpiece, nashville bridge. The frets have been levelled and I installed a new pickguard compliments of Yoslate (Thanks Rob!) I've only spent about a half hour with it and can tell you it has a unique and classic tone. I'll describe it more as I spend more time with it and play through different amps. I like it!
FredZepp Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 That's a cool looker... maple and chrome all the way. I'd expect those to be some nice lively pickups with the new pots/ caps..... enjoy !!
DavesNotHere Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Wow! I love the top on that one. You and I Sir, have different opinions of what qualifies as a beater. That is a sweet looking guitar. If sounds half as good as it looks, you will be pleased.

Lots of dents, scrapes and dings... but...it has mojo... and lots of love left to give. I'll just bring it to PSP and let everyone give it a spank and form your own impression of the tone.
yoslate Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Great concept, well executed! Looks cool and unique! Wonderful top on that baby. Glad I could be of assistance, Scott!
barrymclark Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 I would really love to hear a sound clip... I was about to say, "Where's Lance on this?"
111518 Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I'm curious about the TV Jones as well: I've never owned a Gretsch or other filtertron guitar. Look forward to a comparative tone report. Very cool project --and another cool 150.

Very cool project --and another cool 150. TV Jones makes some top notch pickups. I have owned three sets: Classics, Magna'trons and Power'trons. The Power'trons are in the Gretsch that is being refinished now. I went to see about it Friday but the clear coat is just not wanting to set. So... maybe after PSP I will get to finish it up. The Classics just have that classic Gretsch jangle but with a clarity the originals wouldn't have had. The Magnatrons are like the Classics but have a bit of a Stratish lean to them. The Powertrons are like the Classics but have a bit of Gibby PAF lean to them. That's my experience anyways.

These have a very Duo Jet like vibe to them, but are more aggressive, almost like a single coil. The middle position on these see a volume drop off...kind of like a reverse polarity Moore/Green tone. They do have a lot of jangle in the bridge and neck positions...very toneful...I really like them.
totonka Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I really like the look of those pickups on this guitar. Nice work!
golferwave Posted July 31, 2011 Author Posted July 31, 2011 I really like the look of those pickups on this guitar. Nice work! Thanks! I see you're on the list for PSP...bring your favorite pick and discriminating ear... and have a go at this one!
golferwave Posted July 31, 2011 Author Posted July 31, 2011 Sweet Axis! I can't wait to hear her! Nice work! Can't wait to meet you Gregg! Oh yes, we must all remember to bring our silent tip cables as well! For those of you who don't have one...bring your order form!
Steiner Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Shhh Scott... Don't give out the secret. Travel safe, I look forward to meeting you too!
DetroitBlues Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 If you call that a beater, you very well may have thrown my H140 away....
schundog Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I agree with everyone else, that thing looks GREAT! I had a Reverend Flatroc for a few years with "Revtron" pickups; Someone once told me they were a form of mini-humbuckers, but I don't know if that is true or not. It was a Fender scale neck, and, like most if not all Reverends, had a "Bass Contour" knob that really gave it balls. Fantastic sounding guitar, that I, of course, sold to fuel GAS, in this case, Brent's old H-170. No regrets. I WILL be curious how your DIY sounds next week!
brentrocks Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 That is a great DIY....you bringing that one next week?
golferwave Posted July 31, 2011 Author Posted July 31, 2011 If you call that a beater, you very well may have thrown my H140 away.... Wait until you see it up close. It also had a headstock repair at some point but it's a lighter one at just a little over 9 lbs. That is a great DIY....you bringing that one next week? I'm bringing it Brent!

GASguy Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 That is a really nice looking guitar despite any marks or wear it may have sustained, and it looks cool with the TV Jones pickups. Would love to have an opportunity to hear a sound clip or maybe a video from PSP.
